In recent weeks, momentum has been building toward reintegrating Syria into the Arab League. The country was suspended from the organization in November 2011, eight months into a brutal regime suppression effort that had killed 5,000 civilians. Ten years on and with an estimated 500,000 dead, several Arab states—encouraged by Russia—are taking steps to end the decade-long isolation of Bashar al-Assad and restore Syria’s membership. Although the Arab League is an archaic, dysfunctional, and largely irrelevant organization, the move is nevertheless significant for what it signals: a greater regional willingness to engage with Assad politically and economically. Consistent with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 (2015), U.S. policy has premised any such reengagement on a valid political transition, but regional states may undermine the prospects for real change by welcoming Damascus back into the fold prematurely.

Authorities probe death of Swiss senior diplomat in Iran —US reportedly notified

SWISS AUTHORITIES ON TUESDAY confirmed that a senior diplomat working at the embassy of Switzerland in Iran had died, after apparently falling from a high-rise building in a leafy northern Tehran suburb. Subsequent reports stated that United States officials had been informed of the incident.
The Swiss diplomat’s death would be of interest to Washington, because the Swiss embassy in the Iranian capital has represented US interests since 1980. A few months earlier, Iran and the US had suspended diplomatic ties following the dramatic events surrounding what came to be known as the Iran hostage crisis. The two countries have yet to re-establish diplomatic ties.
The diplomat, a 51-year-old woman, has not been identified.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said in a statement Monday that it had summoned the Turkish charge d’affaires and handed him “a protest note” over “violations of Iraqi sovereignty” arising from the May 1 visit by Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar to a Turkish military base in Iraqi Kurdistan. Turkey responded that it fully respected Iraqi sovereignty and territorial integrity and signaled its intention to carry on the operation, saying it was in line with efforts to eradicate rebels of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

- Ahval NEWS May 04 2021 12:19 Gmt+3 – Iraq’s foreign ministry summoned Turkey’s chargé d’affairs to Baghdad to express its strong resentment at a visit by the Turkish defence minister to a military base in the north of the country.
Senior undersecretary Nizar Al-Khairalla handed the diplomat a formal note of protest, complaining that Turkey was breaking international law by infringing on Iraq’s territorial integrity, the ministry said on Monday.
“The Iraqi government expressed its strong resentment and condemnation of the presence of Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar in Iraqi territory and meeting with Turkish forces that are illegally present there without coordination or prior approval by the relevant authorities in Iraq,” the ministry said.
