A Syrian Kurdish official said today she hopes the United States will keep its forces in the region in the future no matter who is president.
Ilham Ahmed, president of the Executive Committee of the Syrian Democratic Council, the political arm of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) that control northeast Syria, said at an event hosted by Newlines Institute that it is in America’s interests to help Kurdish-led forces fight the Islamic State (IS) in the country.
“What we have seen is that each president comes from a party that has its own strategy and policy regarding Syria,” Ahmed said in response to Al-Monitor’s question. “We expect overall that the strategy for the US is to protect firstly its homeland security by fighting terrorism alongside Kurds and the Syrian Democratic Forces.”

Between 1989 and 1994, the European Parliament passed a series of resolutions of unanimous support for Kurds in northern (Turkey) and southern (Iraq) Kurdistan. In the south, Saddam’s regime used chemical gas against the Kurds. In Turkey, military rule, which came to power in a coup d’état, followed a policy of fire and iron against the Kurds. These two events, one a genocide and the other a steady massacre, introduced the Kurdish cause to the Europeans.

Selbst in aufgeregten Zeiten lässt sich ein Konsens recht einfach finden, wenn nur die Formel weit genug gefasst ist und auf Selbstverständliches zielt. So war Ernst Osterkamp, Präsident der Deutschen Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung, ersichtlich nicht auf Widerspruch eingestellt, als er gegen Ende einer Diskussion im Rahmen der „Woche der Meinungsfreiheit“ einen Kommentar aus dem Publikum aufnahm. Es gehe doch in der Diskussion „nicht um die Ablehnung von Alterität, sondern um die Ablehnung von Rassismus. Und dass rassistische Erzählweisen und Bilder nicht weiter unkritisch tradiert werden.“ Osterkamp ergänzte: „Darüber können wir uns schnell einigen“, und drei der vier übrigen Teilnehmer nickten. Der vierte, der Literaturkritiker Ijoma Mangold, nicht. Er nannte die Forderung „die Gegenposition zu dem, was ich gesagt habe. Das ist doch kein Konsens!“

THE UNITED STATES CENTRAL Intelligence Agency has established a task force to examine recent cases of the so-called “Havana Syndrome”, a mysterious medical condition that continues to puzzle experts. The matter came to light in 2017, when Washington recalled the majority of its personnel from its embassy in Havana, Cuba, and at least two more diplomats from its consulate in the Chinese city of Guangzhou. The evacuees reported experiencing “unusual acute auditory or sensory phenomena” and hearing “unusual sounds or piercing noises”.
