BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 2,064, June 4, 2021 – ISRAEL – EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The world just marked the 80th anniversary of the Farhud, the Arab-Nazi pogrom against the Jews of Baghdad and Basra that occurred on June 1-2, 1941. The term Arab–Nazi is entirely appropriate, not simply because these Arabs were fascist in mind and deed, but because they explicitly identified with Germany’s Nazi Party. Some of the rioters wore swastikas; more than a few marched in the Nuremberg torchlight parades. The Nazi ideology that motivated the Arab slaughterers of Jews in 1941—the desire to exterminate Jews from the face of the earth—motivates the Arabs and Muslims who assault Israelis and Jews today.

I will be 84 next month — even though I have smoked since I was sixteen. I started with five Woodbines and now I smoke Davidoff magnums which I have to get from Germany.
I recently told my doctor I smoke twenty a day, then about ten in the evenings — and I try and keep it down to five during the night. I also told him that I have had three doctors in the last fifty years. Each of them recommended I give up. But each of them has now died; the last one only a year older than me. My new doctor laughed and said nothing. He has a good sense of humour.

Minutes before the midnight deadline on June 2, Israeli centrist leader Yair Lapid informed President Reuven Rivlin that he had succeeded in forming a new coalition government, potentially heralding the end of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s twelve-year rule. The new government will be led by right-wing figure Naftali Bennett as prime minister for two years, followed by Lapid in the second rotation.

The US Department of State recently appointed Richard Norland as the country’s special envoy to Libya. Norland, a career diplomat who became US ambassador to Libya in August 2019, will coordinate with the Government of National Unity (GNU) on stabilising Libya and ensuring that national elections are held as scheduled in December 2021.
The State Department’s appointment rectifies former President Donald Trump’s apathy towards the Libyan conflict, but US strategy towards the Eastern Mediterranean remains ambiguous. The Biden administration has not developed a consistent policy towards Turkey, lacks a clear blueprint to assert US diplomatic influence in Libya and has not clarified its policy towards Syria’s reconstruction.

Don’t let the high-profile visit by the head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Service, Abbas Kamel, mislead you. I wrote about it previously – Egypt is responsible for almost every rocket that is launched at Israel from Gaza, whether manufactured locally in Gaza or imported from Lebanon, Syria or any other place.
To manufacture rockets in Gaza, Hamas needs to import raw materials and machinery. To import parts or entire rockets, Hamas needs a logistical route. In both cases, the logistical route passes through Egypt and Sinai. The sea is to the west, and the State of Israel is to the north and the east.

Im April 1987 gab die Psychologin Alice Miller, die durch ihren 1979 erschienenen Bestseller »Das Drama des begabten Kindes« und das 1980 erschienene Buch »Am Anfang war Erziehung« einem breiten Publikum bekannt geworden war, in der Zeitschrift Psychologie heute ihre Abkehr von der Psychoanalyse bekannt. Vorbereitet hatte sich diese Abkehr in ihren Publikationen der vergangenen Jahre. In »Am Anfang war Erziehung« hatte Miller auf Katharina Rutschkys 1977 veröffentlichte Quellensammlung »Schwarze Pädagogik« Bezug genommen, die anhand der Erziehungspraxis des westeuropäischen Bürgertums seit dem 18. Jahrhundert den Widerspruch zwischen den aufklärerischen Idealen bürgerlicher Pädagogik und dem oft barbarischen Erziehungsalltag in Familien und Schulen darstellte. Miller nahm an Rutschkys Buch zwei Umdeutungen vor.
