When Naftali Bennett left the world of high-tech to enter Israeli politics, the idea that he might achieve the top spot by pushing aside Benjamin Netanyahu would have been inconceivable to him. And even later on, as he led a party to the right of Likud, he regarded it as an ally of the premier, not an opponent—let alone the engine of his political demise. Any notion of him succeeding Netanyahu was a scenario that smart political observers believed was something that could only occur after Netanyahu had retired and also involved Bennett rejoining the Likud.

Als Naftali Bennett die Welt der Hightech verließ, um in die israelische Politik einzutreten, wäre ihm die Vorstellung, dass er den Spitzenplatz erreichen könnte, indem er Benjamin Netanjahu beiseite schiebt, undenkbar gewesen. Und selbst später, als er eine Partei rechts vom Likud anführte, betrachtete er sie als Verbündeten des Premierministers, nicht als Gegner – geschweige denn als Motor seines politischen Niedergangs. Jede Vorstellung davon, dass er Netanjahu nachfolgt, war ein Szenario, von dem kluge politische Beobachter glaubten, dass es etwas war, das erst nach Netanjahus Rücktritt eintreten konnte und Bennett auch dazu bewegte , dem Likud beizutreten.

Among the most important developments since the end of last year’s fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been the dramatic expansion in consultations and cooperation between Russia and Iran. This development reflects their common opposition to border changes, shared concern about the expansion of Turkish influence in the South Caucasus and Central Asia, as well as their desire to do an end-run around Western sanctions by promoting north-south trade at a time when east-west trade has been curtailed. The complementary geopolitical calculations of the two countries have long been recognized (see EDM, March 24, 2020 and February 25, 2021; Nezavisimaya Gazeta, June 3, 2021), but the extent to which Moscow and Tehran have sought to realize them, culminating in a decision two days ago (June 1) to expand bilateral military cooperation talks and Russian arms sales to Iran, have not.

But on Tuesday, in the midst of everything, the key strategic difference between Prime Minister Benjamin and members of the camp defined by hatred of Netanyahu came into full view.

This is not a eulogy. Even if these days’ drama indeed results in Bibi Netanyahu’s departure from the prime ministerial residence on Balfour Street, his shadow will still hover above us, possibly for years.
Even if the Bennett-Lapid government materializes, chances of a Netanyahu comeback will remain high: The coalition will be fragile, Iran might attack, and the court might acquit him, to mention but a few of the circumstances that could make Netanyahu spring back like a Jack-in-the-box.
Still, Netanyahu this week emerged as a leader in vertigo, if even one still living in denial and refusing to accept his fate. Historians will likely mark 2021 as the year his star fell, even if someday his career will rebound. After 12 straight years of political mastery, the wiz who habitually built coalitions, floored opponents and toyed with rival and allied parties – has run out of tricks.
