MESOPOTAMIA NEWS MID EAST : Rethinking Israeli-Turkish Relations

By Dr. Efrat AvivJune 11, 2021

Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan walks off stage after criticizing Israel at Davos, 2009, image via Wikipedia

BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 2,070, June 11, 2021 / ISRAEL

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Bilateral relations between Turkey and Israel have existed on various levels for many years. Today, relations between the states hinge primarily on trade, as mutual distrust prevents any meaningful progress despite periodic attempts at an easing of tensions. But the Guardian of the Walls operation proved once again that anti-Israeli sentiments exist not only in Turkey’s Nationalist/Islamist/Leftist circles but in Kemalist/secularist circles as well. The extent of anti-Israelism in Ankara is so extreme as to be difficult if not impossible to bridge. Israel should expect no change in this sentiment, not even during the first stages of a post-Erdoğan era.

The fighting is still continuing.
  • A video of the deployment of KDP-forces to areas controlled by the HPG guerrilla in the Metina region shows that German weapons are being used by the KDP-forces for their attacks. In the video a German military vehicle (model: Allschutz-Transport-Fahrzeug (ATF) Dingo) is clearly visible.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS SPECIAL : Inside the palace intrigue in Jordan and a thwarted ‘deal of the century’

Opinion by David Ignatius Columnist – June 11, 2021 – THE WASHINGTON POST

President Donald Trump had a dizzying dream for a diplomatic “deal of the century” for Arab-Israeli peace that would unite his allies Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

It never happened, in large part because Jordan’s King Abdullah II would not bend to pressure and make concessions on the status of Jerusalem and other issues affecting the Palestinians. His resistance came at a price: Abdullah’s kingdom has been shaken by tremors over the past several years, encouraged by the squeeze from top political leaders in the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Abdullah’s troubles erupted into public view in early April, when the king’s security forces detained three prominent Jordanians he suspected of plotting to destabilize his regime: Prince Hamzah, the former crown prince groomed by his American-born mother for the throne; Sharif Hassan bin Zaid, a relative of the king and a powerful tribal leader; and Bassem Awadallah, a former Jordanian minister who had become a confidant of the Saudi crown prince, who’s often known by his initials, MBS.

A Jordanian prosecutor referred charges against bin Zaid and Awadallah to the State Security Court on June 2, but the details weren’t disclosed publicly.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS LATEST : US reaffirms opposition to Turkey’s S-400 ahead of Biden-Erdogan summit

“We urge Turkey, and all US allies and partners, to avoid purchases of Russian weaponry, including additional S-400s, which bring Russia revenue, access, and influence.”

Laurie Mylroie   11. June 2021 – WASHINGTON DC (Kurdistan 24) – The Pentagon and State Department have both articulated their latest stance regarding the presence of the S-400 in Turkey: it is unacceptable.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS BACKGROUNDER : Can Lapid-Bennett coalition keep it together?

Eight years after an alliance was forged between Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid and Yamina leader Naftali Bennett, that brotherhood is getting the latter into the prime minister’s seat.

Ben Caspit – AL MONITOR – June 11, 2021 – If all goes according to plan, Yamina leader Naftali Bennett will be sworn in as Israel’s 13th prime minister on June 13. The following day he will join the other members of his eight-party coalition government for a traditional photo with the president. Bennett will be setting several major precedents. For the first time in Israeli history, a politician whose party only won 5% of the vote (translated into six seats in the 120-member Knesset) will lead the Jewish state. This is also the first time that a yarmulke-wearing Jew is being handed the reins to the sovereign Jewish state.

A tremendous burden of proof lies on Bennett’s shoulders.
