MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : WOKE-STAMMELN UNTER DER REGENBOGENFAHNE

Nachrichtenagenturen gendern : Hingedrehte Bedeutungen

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS  „WHATFORE?“ – Arab Israeli journalist Hassan Shelan’s home bombed

The destroyed home of Arab Israeli journalist Hassan Shelan is seen in Baqa al-Gharbiyye, Israel, following a bombing on June 17.
New York, June 22, 2021 – Israeli authorities must conduct a swift and thorough investigation into the bombing of journalist Hassan Shelan’s home and hold those responsible to account, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today.

At about 11 p.m. on June 17, a bomb exploded on the second floor of Shelan’s home in the Arab-majority Israeli city of Baqa al-Gharbiyye, causing severe damage to the building but resulting in no injuries, according to posts by the journalist on Twitter, a report by his employer, the Israeli daily newspaper Yedioth Ahronot’s news website Ynet, and a statement by the Skeyes Center for Media and Cultural Freedom, a regional press freedom group.

Police told Shelan, who covers Arab affairs for Ynet, that two unidentified people on a motorcycle stopped near his home, one of them jumped over a fence and planted the bomb, and then fled the scene, according to Ynet and Skeyes.

Previously, on June 3, two masked gunmen shot at Shelan’s house and car in the Arab-majority city of Taibeh, as CPJ documented at the time. Police are investigating both the shooting and the bombing, but have made no arrests, according to Ynet and the journalist’s tweets.

“The rising number of attacks on Arab Israeli journalists is unacceptable. The bombing of Hassan Shelan’s home is at least the third attack on an Arab Israeli journalist in less than a month,” said CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa representative Ignacio Miguel Delgado. “Israeli authorities should step up their efforts to swiftly investigate these attacks, hold the perpetrators to account, and ensure the safety of journalists and their families.”

In images Shelan posted with his tweets, his home can be seen with extensive damage as a result of the explosion, including a partly collapsed wall. He told Skeyes that he and his family were not home when the bomb exploded, adding, “We are in a state of anxiety and tension, because we don’t know who is targeting us.”

Israeli Minister of Internal Security Omer Bar-Lev called Shelan a few hours after the explosion and told him that he would not allow violence against journalists to go unpunished, and that Israeli police are taking the attacks very seriously, according to Ynet.

Shelan’s most recent work for Ynet before the attack was a June 1 audio report about Arab workers who were allegedly fired from a grocery store for their political activity. In a June 19 tweet, Shelan said he did not know who the perpetrators are or what they want from him, but wrote that he would continue his work.

CPJ emailed the Israeli police spokesperson’s office for comment, but did not immediately receive any reply.

On June 9, unidentified assailants fired dozens of bullets at the home of the Arab Israeli journalist Nidal Ikhbaria in the Arab-majority Israeli city of Umm al-Fahm, as CPJ documented at the time.

Biden administration not trading Syrian oil for aid corridors with Moscow

The Biden administration said Syrian oil is for the people of Syria, not for the United States.

Amberin Zaman AL MONITOR –  June 21, 2021 – The Joe Biden administration has denied claims its decision to not renew a sanctions waiver for an American energy company that was planning to extract and market oil in Kurdish-controlled northeastern Syria is connected to efforts to get Russia to maintain cross-border humanitarian aid corridors to the war-stricken country.

The waiver for Delta Crescent Energy expired in May and was not renewed, as first reported by Al-Monitor a year after it was granted by the Donald Trump administration, which said it was keeping some US troops in northeast Syria to “keep” and “secure” the oil.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : ISRAEL AGAIN HIT HARD BY CORONA VIRUS

Children dominate 125 new covid cases, highest fig since April

Jun 22, 2021 DEBKA FILES ISRAEL – Masks were back at schools and some crowd centers in Israel on Tuesday, June 22, after 125 new coronavirus cases were confirmed, most of them children, 40pc of them adults after vaccination and 26 in serious condition. This total is still just 0.003pc of the numbers tested. It is blamed on the “Indian variant” (Delta) brought into the country by travelers returning home. Due to its rapid transmission rate, it is already the cause of 90pf of new infections.

Female soldiers and a civilian tested covid-19 positive on Monday, the first since May 2. They have been isolated.

Stricter testing and quarantine measures are to be clamped down on arrivals at Ben Gurion airport. Parents are being strongly urged to stop taking unvaccinated children on their trips and avoid the seven countries marked red.

News of the Indian strain sent 28,000 youths aged 12-15 to vaccination centers on Monday with the same number waiting their turn.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : LEBANON IS GOING TOTALLY GROUND ZERO !

Lebanon raises price of bread amid crippling economic crisis

AP   5 Hours   22. June 2021  – A homeless woman drinks water from a garbage dumpster in Beirut, Lebanon, July 23, 2020. The World Bank said in June 2020 Lebanon’s economic crisis is likely the worst in the world in 150 years.

Lebanon’s economy ministry on Tuesday raised the price of subsidized bread for the fifth time in a year amid the tiny country’s worsening economic and financial crisis.

The ministry said the reason behind the latest increase is that the central bank has ended sugar subsidies, which adds to the cost of bread production.

Lebanon is grappling with the worst economic and financial crisis in its modern history — one that the World Bank has said is likely to rank as one of the worst the world has seen in the past 150 years.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : EUROPEAN MISCALCULATION ! – Iran’s New President Means Headache and Opportunity for Europe

CORNELIUS ADEBAHR – CARNEGIE ENDOWMENT

With the election of a hardliner as Iranian president, eight years of European thinking that Tehran could be a partner will come to an end. It’s time for the EU to address not only the nuclear file but also regional security threats.June 22, 2021

In Iran, political fortunes can turn quickly. Usually, this happens for the worse, but not when you’re a hardline conservative judge like Ebrahim Raisi. After clearly losing against the incumbent in 2017, he won a decisive victory on June 18 in his second attempt to become president of Iran.

It helped that the system’s rules directly favored the frontrunner. The obvious part was the clearing of the field of candidates by the Guardian Council, a clerical-legal body whose members were mostly handpicked either by the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei or by Raisi himself, as head of the judiciary for the past two years.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS BY “BREAKING DEFENSE” – Israeli Defense Minister Orders Forces Ready For Iran Ops

The DC trip is Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi’s first, and is aimed mainly to present the Americans with intelligence Israeli sources say proves that Iran is cheating on the nuclear agreement.

By   ARIE EGOZIon June 21, 2021 at 5:52 PM BREAKING DEFENSE  –  TEL AVIV: The election of Iran’s new hardline president, coupled with Washington’s eagerness to sign a new nuclear deal, have led Israel’s Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi to order some units to accelerate preparations for an armed conflict with Iran, sources in the Defense Minister’s office say.

One of the factors that appears to be behind these moves is that after President Ibrahim Raisi takes office on Aug. 3 he will form a new national security board expected to fully obey his orders, Uzi Rabi, a senior expert here on Iran, told BD.

Raisi held his first official press conference since his election  during which he stressed that Iran’s foreign relations would not depend on decisions made under the nuclear deal.
