November 21, new date for Iraqi Kurdistan provincial elections

ERBIL-Hewlêr, shafaaqcom – 7.8.2013 –  Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced on Wednesday, determining 21 of November as the date for provincial council’s elections of Kurdistan region.

“The Head of KRG, Nechirvan Barzani decided to determine 21 of November as the date for provincial council elections of the region,” KRG statement said.The statement noted that the resolution will be sent promptly to the Independent Higher Electoral Commission to begin preparations for the elections.It is worth mentioning that the elections of the provincial councils of the region have not been conducted since 2005 and has always been controversial widely among the various political parties in Kurdistan region. Meanwhile the Independent Higher Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced its willingness to hold provincial elections in Kurdistan region according to the date which was identified by the provincial government on 21 of next November.“We have received the letter of the regional government to determine 21 of next November as a date for the provincial elections and today we will start to take preparations to conduct these elections,” The Head of the commission, Serbst Mustafa told medias.

IHEC announced earlier that it had submitted a request to Kurdistan regional government (KRG) of its inability to hold provincial elections in the province with the parliamentary elections in the 21 of next September as scheduled to be held. KRG announced Tuesday that it had identified 21 of next November as a date for provincial elections in the region.
