Official Kurdistan Counter Terrorism Directorate Denies Involvement in US Operation that Killed Iranian Top General
Basnews English 2021/05/09 – 17:32 ERBIL — The official Kurdistan Counter Terrorism Directorate, which is part of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), has denied any involvement in the US operation that led to the killing of Iranian top general Qasem Soleimani on 3rd January 2020.
The directorate issues a statement on its official Facebook page on Sunday to make it clear that the “Kurdistan Counter Terrorism Group” or “CTG” referred in an investigative report published on Yahoo News earlier the day was on the forces affiliated under the command of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), and not related to the official security council of Kurdistan.
The article, entitled “ ‘Conspiracy is hard’: Inside the Trump administration’s secret plan to kill Qassem Soleimani”, written by Jack Murphy and Zach Dorfman, revealed details about the operation after interviewing “15 current and former U.S. officials”, saying that operatives from the Counter-Terrorism Group (CTG) had entered the Baghdad airport with the help of the US forces long before the operation.
They were working in different areas, disguising as airport workers, according to the report. “As the plane taxied off the runway, toward the closed-off portion of the airfield, one of the Kurdish operatives disguised as ground crew guided the aircraft to a halt on the tarmac.”
Kurdistan Region’s Counter Terrorism Directorate noted that it is commonly known as “CTD”, and that the “CTG” mentioned in the article are the forces under the command of PUK Co-leader Lahour Jangi “and his brother”, which is not committed to the Law no. 4 of 2011 ratified by the Kurdistan Region Parliament.
In the statement, the CTD calls on the Kurdistan Regional Government to investigate the report and reveal the outcomes to the public.
