MESOP : TODAY’S ISW REPORT ON SYRIA

by Isabel Nassief – ISW – 25.6.2014 – The Syrian regime has sustained targeted strikes against ISIS positions in eastern Syria and northern Aleppo province. Opposition fighters continue to clash with pro-regime forces in Eastern Ghouta, Damascus and Qalamoun. However, a counteroffensive by pro-regime forces in Qalamoun indicates that Hezbollah fighters are replacing redeployed Iraqi Shi’a militia fighters. Regime air strikes on the Mhoassan-Abu Kamal road as well as well as reported ISIS preparations in the area indicate that ISIS may attempt to seize the border town of Abu Kamal from opposition forces. On June 21 ISIS took control of the adjacent Qaim border crossing in Iraq.
