Shingal defense forces join volunteer fighters in fight against IS
24 Feb 2015 – Kurdpress – A member of the Shingal Defense Forces, affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), told Kurdpress that the forces have joined people volunteer forces and have turned into a part of Iraqi army in fight against the radicals of the Islamic State (IS).
Rashed Davud said the Shingal forces are now a part of Iraqi army and would defend Shingal and Kurdish regions and other parts of Iraq as a Kurdish force. He added the number of Shingal fighters are some 1500 to 2000 and would cooperate with Iraqi army, expressing his sorrow for Kurdistan Region’s negligence to the forces despite the forces’ fighting against the IS radicals. Shingal Defense Forces is under the control of the PKK and is running a part of Shingal, in Nainawa province. Volunteer forces is a Shiite militia group and was formed by Iraqi government after the IS insurgency into Iraq. Its fighters are estimated to exceed 100000 forces.
