MESOP TACTICAL PUK : Official reveals reason behind no operation to liberate Shingal

6 April 2015 – MESOP / KURDPRESS – The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Mosul branch chief stated the Kurdish forces of Peshmerga would not conduct any operation to liberate the northern city of Shingal as long as surrounding areas are under the control of the Islamic State (IS) jihadists.

Ghyas Sorchi told Kurdpress that Shingal Mountain in the north of the city is under the control of the Peshmerga and the Kurdish force would liberate the western, eastern and southern parts of the city if it conducts operation, but such an operation would be useless as long as strategic regions remain under the control of the group.

He said until the areas of Baajeh in northern Shingal, Tel Afar in western Shingal and Syria in eastern Shingal remain at the control of the group, liberating the city of Shingal would be useless. He further went on to say that Shingal would be under threat until the city of Mosul and Nainawa desert remain occupied by the group. He ultimately compared Shingal’s situation to the situation in Kobani, northern Syria that did not fell to the control of the IS despite months of siege, and said clashes are continuing in the streets of the city.
