PUK Media Remain Silent on PKK-KDPI Clashes / Those PUK media that have reported on the events have accused the KDPI of attacking PKK guerrillas

Basnews | Hemin Salih – 26.05.2015 – ERBIL – Media outlets linked to the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) have failed to cover the clashes between the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) near the Kurdistan Region border with Iran earlier this week.PUK media that have reported on the events have accused the KDPI of attacking PKK guerrillas and use the clashes in an effort to discredit the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) –which is politically close to PKK- ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Turkey. Jamal Abdullah, a former PUK journalist told BasNews, “The PUK did not stand with the KDPI during the recent events because it could damage its relationship with the Iranian government.”

“To me, it is crystal clear that the PKK initiated the fight as they killed one KDPI Peshmerga and injured several others, while the KDPI detained two guerrillas but freed them later to show their good intention.” Abdullah explained that PUK media remained silent because they could not clearly blame the PKK or the KDPI. “Iran is more important to the PUK as they have significant influence in Iraq and region.” Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) journalist Aria Farj told BasNews that the PUK media reacted to the incident only to support the PKK and justify the bloodshed between Kurdish political parties. “The PKK understands that the PUK’s support for them comes as part of their competition against the KDP and nothing more.”
