Hundreds were arrested during the May 7 uprising of Kurds of Mahabad and the protests in other cities of this region in the ensuing days. In addition to prisons in Mahabad and Sanandaj, the arrestees were transferred to Orumiyeh, Miando’ab and Naqadeh prisons. The uprising in Mahabad started after a young Kurdish girl Farinaz Khosrawani, 25, jumped off the fourth storey of the Tara Hotel, where she worked, when Iranian intelligence (Itilaat) officers attempted to rape her .

Concurrent with the dispatch of henchmen from Tehran, oppression and control measures in the prisons in this region and the level of presence of suppressive forces inside these prisons have been markedly ramped up. Additionally, it urges international agencies, especially the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Special Rapporteur for the situation of human rights in Iran, and the mandate holders on arbitrary arrests and torture to condemn the atrocities of the mullahs’ regime in Iranian Kurdistan and to take swift and effective action to stop the torture and to secure the release of all the arrestees of the Mahabad uprising and that of the other cities of Kurdistan.
