8 Prisoners Executed a Week After Presidential Elections in Iran

ERBIL  – 24 May 2017 – MESOP NEWS – Only a week after the presidential elections in Iran, eight prisoners were executed across Iran. According to human rights sources, executions against at least eight death row inmates in prisons in Ardabil, Tabriz, Kermanshah and Baluchistan cities across Iran were carried out on Tuesday, May 23. Hengaw human rights organization reported that Mehrdad Askari, 33, a Kurdish national from Humaili city of Kermashah was executed on Tuesday.

Askari remained in Kermashan’s Dezlawa prison for five years on charges of drug offenses.Moreover, five other individuals in the central prison of Tabriz were hanged the same day, according to Kurdistan Human Rights Network. However, the identity of only three of them have been revealed as Kazim Hajjaj, Seyed Ali Mousavi, and Jaber Fakhri.

Meanwhile, a prisoner named Dawar Hamdard was executed in the central prison of Ardebil province. Human rights monitoring organizations also confirmed the execution of a Balochi citizen named Karim Shahnavazi, 30, in Zahidan prison.
The executions carried out in the non-Persian provinces where Hassan Rouhani, the president of Iran, gained the majority of votes.
