Another Syrian Kurdish politician arrested by Rojava Asayish forces
May 22, 2017 Kurdish Region, Syria – ARA News – The Rojava Asayish on Saturday arrested another member of the Kurdish National Council in Syria, Bashar al-Amin, in his house at 11.30.“Al-Amin’s fate is still unknown… we hold the PYD [Democratic Union Party] responsible for his safety. We [KNC] demand the pro-PYD Asayish security forces to disclosure the destiny of Mr. Bashar al-Amin immediately,” the KNC said in a statement.
Bashar al-Amin is a member of the KNC-affiliated Kurdistan Democratic Party of Syria, a political force backed by Iraqi Kurdistan’s President Masoud Barzani.
The KNC accused the PYD of ‘terrorist acts’ that aimed to destroy ‘the national project of the Kurdish National Council in the Kurdistan of Syria’, the KNC said.
“While we condemn and reject these terrorist practices, we call on the PYD to abondin its policies and abandon the language of threat and hegemony,” the Kurdish council said. “And to immediately release all abductees and political hostages without exception.”The KNC demanded the immediate release of its co-Chairs Fesla Yousef, Mohsin Taher and Amin Hossam, and members of the KDP-S Bashar Amin and Nashat Zaza, as well as journalists and activists who were arrested by the Asayish forces of the PYD-led Rojava Self-Administration in northern Syria.
On 9 May, 13 KNC members were arrested after the council reopened its main office in Qamishli city, which was again shut down by the Self-Administration. The arrestees include Fasla Yusuf, the vice president of the KNC, head of the local KNC office Muhsin Taher, and Secretary-General Muhammed Amin Husam.
The tensions are a result of the competition between the affiliates of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and president Masoud Barzani’s Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) over control in the Kurdish territories of Syria and Iraq.
The KDP backs the KNC, while the PKK backs the PYD in Syria. Both sides have arrested or harassed rivals, shut down each other’s media organizations and arrested each other’s reporters. The KDP-linked media accused the PKK of being under the influence of Iran, while the PKK-affiliated media accused the KDP of being under Turkey’s influence.
