6 April 2015 – MESOP – Decrease in Barzani’s power new condition to prolong president’s term: report

Parties in Kurdistan Region want to see the powers of the region’s President Massoud Barzani decreased to prolong the term of the president for another period, website said in a report.

According to Shar Press some parties want the local parliament of the Kurdish region to prolong Barzani’s term and that means changing the presidential system in the region to parliament system. Meanwhile the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and Goran (Change Movement) are seeking to decrease Massoud Barzani’s powers, military and security powers in particular. All security and military forces of the region, including Peshmerga forces, are under the direct control of the region’s president and the parties in the region are seeking to limit Barzani’s powers, especially in Kurdistan Region Security Council that is led by Barzani’s son Masrour Barzani and the parties want Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to control the council. Shar Press further said the KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani, Massoud Barzani’s nephew, has welcomed the idea that the KRG would run the security council of the region.
