Majority Government ‘Only Option’ to Save Iraq: Sadrist Movement

ERBIL20-12-221- The Sadrist Movement, led by powerful Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, said on Sunday that it is determined to form a majority government, considering it “the only option” to save the country.

“The Sadrist movement is keen and determined to form a majority government as it is the only way to save Iraq from all its crises and problems it has been suffering from for years,” Riyadh al-Masoudi, a leading member of the movement, said in a statement.

“Many political parties support forming a majority government, and that is why it will be formed by the coalition following the approval of the Federal Court on the results of the early parliamentary elections,” he added.

Sadr, whose movement won 73 seats in the October parliamentary elections, continues to push for the formation of a national majority government. He held a meeting with a number of Shia political leaders at the residence of Hadi Al-Amiri, the head of al-Fatah Alliance, on 2 December to discuss the matter.

Following the meeting, the Shia cleric wrote on Twitter that he seeks a majority government.

However, the leaders of the Coordination Framework, who have rejected the election results, said on 11 December that they had agreed to nominate Muhammad al-Sihoud and Asaad Al-Eidani for Iraq’s premiership to challenge Sadr’s plans.

“Our movement aims to pressure the Sadrist bloc to ease its conditions which are forming a majority government and referring those responsible for corruption to the judiciary, along with handing out the weapons to the state, as well as integrating the Popular Mobilization Forces [Hashd al-Shaabi] with the security apparatus,” the Coordination Framework previously stated.
