Barzani, Sadr Agree on Committee to Investigate Claims about Israeli Bases in Kurdistan

13-3-2022 ERBIL — Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani and Shia cleric Muqtada Al-Sadr have agreed to form a joint committee to investigate claims about the existence of Israeli bases in the Kurdistan Region.

The issue was discussed during a phone call to discuss last night’s missile attack on Erbil which was later claimed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).

“The sides agreed on the formation of a committee to investigate the truth about claims on the existence of Israeli bases in Erbil, which were used as an excuse for the attack on Erbil,” reads a statement by Barzani Headquarters.

Earlier the day, Iran’s IRGC officially claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it had targeted hidden “Zionist bases” in and around Erbil. However, the claim was soon refuted by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

“The cowardly attack on Erbil on March 13, 2022, allegedly under the pretext of hitting an Israeli base near the US Consulate in Erbil, targeted civilian locations and its justification is only to hide the disgracefulness of such offense,” the KRG said.

The KRG reiterated that the claim of having targeted Israeli bases in Erbil was far from true as there are no Israeli bases in the Kurdistan Region. It also warned that the indifference of the international community in the face of these repeated attacks by Iran will pave the way for their continuation.

“We call on the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, the Arab League, the federal government, the Iraqi parliament, and the Iranian government to urgently investigate these baseless attacks, visit targeted locations, reveal the facts to the public, and take a true and strong stance on these attacks,” the statement added.
