PKK disarming unrealistic before Newruz: Demirtas
22 Feb 2015 – Kurdpress – The co-leader of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Selahattin Demirtas called disarming the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) before new Kurdish year of Newruz unrealistic and asked for direct negotiations between the PKK and Ankara government.PKK-Ankara direct and deep negotiation is needed if a joint statement is to be released about the peace process, he said, adding that the PKK and its umbrella organization the KCK would take necessary steps to create peace in Turkey.
Demirtas added talks are continuing on an expected PKK jailed leader Abdullah Ocalan’s statement on the Kurdish negotiation but “government attempts are also needed. Turkish government’s behaviors and remarks have made the expectation that there would be a PKK disarming in March but the remarks have postponed releasing any statements. “We are nt against disarming in March but it would be unrealistic in short run. The PKK disarming is impossible before Newruz. This does not mean disaccording with disarming but realities make it impossible,” the HDP co-chair added. The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) deputies’ violence in parliaments has rightly proved our outlook to the package, Demirtas said about his party’s approach to a security package opposed by opposition parties. The ratification of the package ended in brawl in Turkish parliament two times with some opposition parties holding injuries. He warned streets would witness the same violence if the package is ratified, vowing that his party would do all its best not to allow the package to be approved.
