MESOP FOCUS : US expresses opposition to Kurdish independent oil sale

The U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration has stressed all Iraqi oil sources belong to the people of the state.

Despite a last year oil deal between Baghdad and the Kurdish government in the north the central government has not sent the Kurds’ share of budget completely, Kurds in Iraq has stated, claiming that the region has sent, the oil it has promised in return for the share of budget, in all but some months. A U.S. official has, however, told Huffington Post that the U.S. position towards Iraqi energy has not changed and still opposes the region to send its oil unilaterally and independently.The official, who has remained unnamed, has told the news agency that the energy sources of Iraq belong to the people in the country and those who export or sell the energy sources without any cooperation with Baghdad would face law.

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Representative to the U.S. Bayan Sami Abdulrahman told the news agency that the region’s President Massoud Barzani is worried about Baghdad’s negligence to its accord with Erbil and Barzani has told U.S. officials in his recent visit to Washington that he is worried about Baghdad’s failure to remain committed to its accord with Erbil.
