Islamic State rockets hit besieged Syrian Kurdish Kobani town for first time (2014)
BEIRUT,— AFP – 28.9.2014 – Rocket fire by jihadists from the Islamic State group hit the besieged Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani [Ain al-Arab in Arabic] on Saturday for the first time, wounding 12 people, a monitor said.
The report comes as the US-led coalition widened its campaign of air strikes against IS targets to include fighters around the Kobani town in Syrian Kurdistan on the Turkish border. “Rockets fired by the IS from hills eight kilometres (five miles) east of Kobani hit the town, wounding 12 people,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.YPJ Commander Meryem Kobanê confirmed Saturday that U.S. circrafts carried out flights in some areas, but denied reports that IS positions were targeted.
Mrs. Kobanê pointed out that they have received information from the commanders of all fronts, and stressed that the reports about American airstrikes are not true.
Also Salih Muslim, the co-president of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD),www.Ekurd.net the biggest Kurdish party in Syrian Kurdistan, warned of an imminent genocide by the IS against Kurds in Kobani in Syrian Kurdistan and is calling on the international community to intervene.
It was the first time IS rockets have hit the town since the assault began on September 16, Abdel Rahman added.
