Gen. Votel Assesses Middle East Security Challenges: On March 29, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander, Gen. Joseph Votel appeared before the House Armed Services Committee to assess the security challenges in the greater Middle East. In his prepared statement, he cited a number of contributing factors to instability, including ethnic and sectarian hostilities, economic uncertainty, large youth unemployment, worsening humanitarian crises, and outside actors seeking to supplant U.S. influence in the region.
