Pro-Al-Qaeda Magazine Celebrates Taliban Takeover Of Afghanistan: ‘After 20 Years Of War, America Has Been Defeated’
MEMRI NEWS 9.9.2021 – Issue 30 of the Thabat weekly magazine, released by the pro-Al-Qaeda Thabat News Agency on August 20, 2021, focuses on the takeover of Afghanistan by the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (the Afghan Taliban). The magazine’s cover depicts former U.S. President George W. Bush, who presided over the 2001 U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, with the English and Arabic text: “After 20 Years Of War.. [sic] America Has Been Defeated.”
Al-Qaeda has sworn allegiance to Taliban leader Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, and the Taliban’s recent gains in Afghanistan were widely celebrated by Al-Qaeda supporters, as well as by jihadi groups officially affiliated with Al-Qaeda, such as Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and Al-Qaeda’s Kurdish Battalions (AQKB).
An article on the first page of Thabat titled, “The Islamic Emirate Gains Control over All of Afghanistan,” reports that, “After twenty years of jihad against more than forty Crusader countries, the mujahideen of the Islamic Emirate succeeded in entering the Afghan capital, Kabul, and gaining control over all of Afghanistan. The mujahideen announced the conquest at a press conference from the Presidential Palace in the capital.”
An article on the first page of Thabat magazine is titled, “The Islamic Emirate Gains Control over All of Afghanistan;” and is illustrated with an image of Taliban fighters in the Presidential Palace in Kabul.
Thabat further notes that, “The Islamic Emirate announced that Islamic shari’a will be the system of government in Afghanistan, not Western democracy.”
The article exultantly reports “a state of great alarm in the Crusader countries after the Muslims’ gaining control over Afghanistan,” noting that there are “fears of a similar event occurring in several other arenas.”
According to Thabat, the U.S. government has admitted that over the course of twenty years of war in Afghanistan, more than 6,300 American soldiers were killed and 20,000 were wounded. The magazine adds that “the accuracy of this sum is in doubt, considering the American government’s customary lies.” The article also notes that the U.S. government claims to have spent more than $2 trillion on the war.
