Leyla Hemid – 03/01/2017 – basnews – ERBIL — The Democratic Union Party (PYD) forces in the past month “committed tens of violations” mainly against the members of their Kurdish opposition parties as well as their own forces and civilians, according to a report by a human rights organization.
The report published by the Center of Democracy for the Human Rights in Kurdistan, which monitors the human rights in Syrian Kurdistan under the rule of PYD, mentioned that violations by PYD forces range from arresting activists to causing their death.
In December 2016, according to the report, six members of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Syria (KDPS) and two more independent activists have been arrested over political charges in different locations under the PYD rule.
A fire event which started “with no clear reason” in Tal Ajar village of Azzar, northwest of Aleppo, and claimed the lives of three KDPS members was also attributed to PYD in the report, though the connection is not quite clear.
The report also cited the “suspicious” killing of a member of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) or PYD’s military wing, Mustafa Omar, who was killed by three bullets in his head.
According to the report, Omar was forced by the PYD members into the military service in Malikiya village around Azzaz.
On December 2, 2016, the report said, the PYD supporters attacked a gathering of the Kurdish National Council of Syria (ENKS) in Qamishlo, wounding five people and burning the Kurdistan flag. The human rights organization also related the death of a KDPS member Salah Yunis to PYD, as he died in hospital after being tortured by the YPG forces and PYD Asayish (security) service.
Another violation that the report blamed PYD for is the event of a child abortion after the PYD supporters invaded a KDPS gathering in Qamishlo with stones. In the event, Khalisa Rasul lost her unborn child.
Commentators deem PYD’s policies of compulsory military service of Kurdish youth, militarizing every aspect of life, even education, and marginalizing the rest of the Kurdish parties in the three cantons under PYD’s authority may spark further tensions between PYD and the rest of the Kurdish parties. PYD legitimates its policies by claiming that they are to safeguard the de facto administration which was established only after the civil war broke out in Syria. http://www.basnews.com/index.php/en/news/middle-east/322186
