Is this rebel leader the West’s last great hope in Syria? – Susannah George – FOREIGN POLICY
12-3-2014 – ANTAKYA, Turkey — In this Turkish town, just miles from the Syrian border, Jamal Maarouf has traded his military fatigues for simple civilian dress. He sits in a narrow apartment in the town’s old city; a tangle of charging smartphones rests in the middle of the room. The leader of the Syrian Revolutionary Front (SRF), a moderate rebel alliance, is surrounded by his commanders and advisors, who are perched on overstuffed couches and thin foam mattresses.

The Miserable Afterlife of Michel Aflaq / By Aron Lund
DON’T FORGET TO MENTION THAT AFLAQ PRAISED WARMLY THE GERMAN NAZIS (MESOP)
Aron Lund Monday, March 10, 2014 – Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his supporters recently celebrated the fifty-first anniversary of what they refer to as “the March 8 Revolution.” On that day in 1963, a hastily assembled military junta overthrew then president Nazim al-Kudsi and declared itself in control of Syria. Within a few months, officers loyal to the Baath Party had outmaneuvered their allies and assumed sole control. Five decades later, the party is still clinging to power.

Week Past, Week Ahead: Syria – Is Assad Regime’s Offensive Succeeding?
By Scott Lucas – 10, 2014 – The week in Syria was marked by the disputed claims of the Assad regime that it had advanced in its Qalamoun offensive, both north of Damascus and in Homs Province. – The Syrian military said on Saturday that it had taken Zara, one of the remaining insurgent positions between Homs and the Lebanese border. Earlier in the week, it claimed success close to Yabroud, the largest city in the Qalamoun region, which it has been attacking for almost a month. – The Zara claim was confirmed by insurgent sources. However, the declaration of advance near Yabroud appeared to be premature — insurgents said they re-took Rima Farms and territory close to the village of Sahel, killing scores of Syrian troops and Hezbollah.
Evaluating Scenarios & Indicators for the Syrian War
TODAY’S MESOP DOCUMENTATION (III) : THE TECHNOLOGY OF PUZZLE PLAY
March 10, 2014 Dr Helene Lavoix – The (Read) Team Analysis Society
Evaluating the scenarios : As the Geneva conference took place (see previous post), we have obviously been in the case of scenario 1 – Negotiating Peace for Syria in Geneva, in its version 1.2 – all but the Salafis. –Thus the overall definition of this scenario and the possibility to see it happening were correctly anticipated, including the fact that the Salafi-Nationalists would refuse to participate in the negotiations. The “Jihadis” were, of course, excluded as foreseen. The fact that the regime of Bashar al-Assad was not represented by a person acceptable to both the regime and the “opposition” – as imagined in the scenario – implied that the negotiations could not be successful.
