Markus Bickel – 15.03.2014 · FAZ – Drei Jahre nach Beginn des Aufstands gegen Assad setzen Regime und Opposition auf eine militärische Lösung. Die russisch-amerikanische Annäherung in der Chemiewaffenfrage hat den Syrien-Krieg verlängert. Bei 100.000 Toten haben die Vereinten Nationen aufgehört zu zählen. Die Angaben ließen sich nicht mehr genau überprüfen, gab die Weltorganisation zur Begründung an. Das Sterben in Syrien hört dadurch nicht auf: Menschenrechtsorganisation gehen inzwischen von mehr als 146.000 Menschen aus, die seit Beginn des Aufstands gegen Präsident Baschar al Assad vor drei Jahren ums Leben gekommen sind. Zehn Millionen sind auf der Flucht, drei Millionen in den Nachbarländern, rund sieben in Syrien selbst. Das ist die Hälfte der Bevölkerung – und das größte Flüchtlingsdrama der Welt, ja, in der Geschichte des Nahen Ostens.

MESOP INSIGHT : ‘Street agitators’ reflect on course of Syrian revolution / By Tareq al-Abed
March 15, 2014 – AL MONITOR – In the early days of the popular protests in Syria, many so-called tansikiyyas, or “coordinating committees,” were formed. They were the cornerstone for gathering crowds for street demonstrations, for delivering the public’s voice to the media and for “supporting relief operations.”The tansikiyyas appeared at the beginning of the demonstrations. They worked on inviting people to protest, on “securing the [protest] areas” and on videotaping then broadcasting the demos through the media. Tansikiyya activists used to appear on TV under pseudonyms and with their faces hidden. They also had a big role in giving titles to the individual protests, in writing banners and in promoting those banners during the protests.
