MESOP REPORT : Kurdish families displaced by Islamists from Syria’s Tel Abyad

21-03-2014 –  Urfa, Turkey− Kurdish neighbourhoods in the city of Tel Abyad in northern Syria saw large displacement movement among civilians due to the mounting pressures by the al-Qaeda splinter group of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) −which is in control over the city since months.  Hundreds of Tel Abyad’s Kurdish residents crossed the border into Turkey on Wednesday, escaping “suppressive practices” of ISIL members against them. Dozens of families have previously left the city after ISIL’s control.

FEHIM TASTEKIN – AL MONITOR 22.3.2014 – Just what Turkey needed: As the country was already in the throes of pre-election turbulence, plus corruption scandals and leaks of secret phone conversations, the Syrian boomerang came back. The warning by Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), that Turkey could easily send its army inside Syria to defend the Sovereign Turkish Enclave of Jabar Fortress and the Tomb of Suleiman Shah, guarded by a small Turkish military detachment, was enough to bring the issue of a cross border operation on the agenda.

German firms played larger role in Syria’s chemical weapons program

By Ofer Aderet – Haaretz & Reuters – 20.3.2014 – German companies played a larger role in the building of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile than was previously known, according to information provided by the world’s chemical watchdog and reported by German media late on Wednesday.The reports said that the between 1982-1993, German firms had made some 50 shipments of technologies and materials that could be used to produce chemical weapons.
