MESOP LATEST WEST KURDISTAN : Margada town in Hasaka province under ISIL control

04-04-2014 –  ARA News – Qamishli, Syria– Fighters of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) took control over the entire town of Margada in the southern countryside of Hasaka city on Tuesday evening, after receiving reinforcements from Raqqa province. Fighters of the al-Nusra Front, the Islamic Front and the Free Syrian Army were forced to withdraw from the town after clashes with ISIL fighters for over a month. The clashes resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries in the ranks of the conflicting groups.

ASHARQ AL-AWSAT – 3-4-2014 – The battle for the coast is different to the other battles raging on our soil in Syria. In some areas, the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and other rebel factions are fighting a regular army dominated by a specific sectarian and religious group. This does not mean the FSA is fighting a specific sect or religion, but it does explain why the fight against the regime’s army has not turned into a civil war. The battles we are now witnessing are a struggle marked predominantly by their opposition to a totalitarian power rejected by wide segments of Syria’s diverse society, including Alawites, Christians, Druze and Ismailis, among others.

AL MONITOR – 3.4.2014 – Retired Brig. Gen. Haldun Solmazturk, who spent many years serving with NATO, tells Al-Monitor, “If there was really a threat to Turkey from Syria, and if there was really concrete intelligence about it, it would go without saying that Turkey would propose putting this on the agenda for the [NATO] foreign ministers meeting.” Yet, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu says that Turkey did not put any potential threat to Turkey from Syria on the official agenda when NATO foreign ministers held their regularly scheduled meeting in Brussels on April 1-2.

Zamanalwsl – 3.4.2014 – Dr. Abdul Baset Seda, a member in the political committee of the Syrian coalition criticized the opposition for not being able to draw a political line for the revolution. The former president of the National Council, in an interview with Zaman Alwasl, said that when the national council was established in Istanbul, there was not any non-Syrian person in the hall, while when the coalition was founded the western diplomats were more than the coalition’s members.
