Aleppo’s rebel fighters disillusioned with war
Rumors of ISIS’ cooperation with the Syrian regime abound. And indeed, they enjoy a strange immunity from regime airstrikes.
The only certainty is that all rebels are busy fighting against ISIS. “
Francesca Borri – AL MONITOR – 8.5.2014 – ALEPPO, Syria — Its base comes from a tractor, two rusty poles and random pieces collected in a glassworks. To assemble this mortar, nothing has been wasted. It’s been built by downloading instructions from Google. “For grenades, I used even the fertilizer of my wife’s flowers,” said Firas with a smile. He is 43, and in his previous life was a sales manager in a car dealership. Now he introduces himself as “the mortar manager.”
Syrian Kurdish Areas Under the Rule of Law? / YASA GERMANY EXPERTS – The PYD Justice
By Carl Drott – Carnegie Endowment
2014-05-07- As elsewhere in war-torn Syria, the collapse of established state institutions in the northern, largely Kurdish areas has left a gaping legal and judicial vacuum in its wake. In the cities of Qamishli and Hasakah in northeastern Syria, official courts are still operating in the enclaves controlled by the Syrian regime. However, while they continue to serve the local community in some ways, for example by producing official documents, there is no police force to carry out arrests on their behalf.

TODAY’S MESOP QUOTATION – WEST KURDISTAN – ROJAVA-PYD
The question remains whether the PYD will continue to dominate the new structures in the largely Kurdish areas indirectly or whether there is a genuine ambition to move in the direction of pluralism and separation of powers. Only time will tell. http://carnegieendowment.org

MESOP REPORT : Syrian Kurd leader urges Turkey to join fight against jihadists / Interview with Salih Muslim (PYD)
After prolonged tensions, relations between Turkey and the Syrian Kurds are showing signs of a thaw. – AL MONITOR – Amberin Zaman Posted May 8, 2014
Border crossings to Turkey controlled by the largest Kurdish militia group known as the People’s Protection Units (YPG) were long sealed by the Turkish side. But the restrictions have been eased for the delivery of humanitarian relief.
MESOP NEWS : A VISIT IN WASHINGTON – FACING HOMS
Bloomberg News contextualized the events alongside renewed calls for Western military assistance to rebel elements, opening its write-up by noting that “[w]hile U.S.-backed Syrian opposition leaders in Washington are lobbying for better weapons, the Syrian government has forced rebels to abandon the city of Homs.” Rebel chief Ahmad Jarba announced Tuesday night that he would specifically request anti-aircraft missiles to counter what seems to be a deliberate move by Syrian forces to heighten the use of barrel bombs against rebel-heavy areas.
Iran: “130,000 Iranian Fighters Ready to Enter Syria” – How Revolutionary Guards’ Revelation Was Censored
By Scott Lucas eaworldview – May 7, 2014 08:53 Updated – On Sunday, I noticed an article in Fars News, the Revolutionary Guards’ outlet, about a speech by former Guards commander Hassan Hamedani, in which he claimed that 130,00 members of the Basij militia were ready to enter Syria.I set aside the comments as a bit of posturing from a retired officer, bolstering Fars’ propaganda line of Iran’s firm support for the Assad regime. But then a twist which made me think the comments might be more significant.
The article disappeared.
APOLOGIES BY THE “HIGH-PROFILE WITNESS” OF ‚PEACE IN KURDISTAN“ LONDON
An apology to Mr Massoud Hamid / By Karlos Zurutuza – 8.5.2015
Dear Editorial Staff of Kurdistan Tribune,
I would like to publicly apologize to Mr Massoud Hamid for claiming that he wrote this statement which Reporters Without Borders published on 1 May.
In a previous letter, I identified Mr Hamid as the author of the statement, which deals with alleged abuses against Syrian news providers in areas controlled by the Democratic Union Party (PYD). I had already read it when a source I shall not name forwarded me the link, adding that Mr Hamid was its author.
