While rebel militias have lately suffered serious setbacks in central and northern Syria, they are now recording significant successes in the south — the region lying between Damascus and the Israeli and Jordanian borders. Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s loyalists are on the defensive on all related fronts, risking the loss of this strategically important sector. It is becoming increasingly evident that a rebel push toward the capital from the south may be more promising militarily than an offensive from the so-far-stalemated front lines north of Damascus. The next few weeks may witness further major rebel gains on the southern front, which may ultimately pose the main threat to Assad’s control.

Syrien hat seit Oktober mehrfach Chemiewaffen gegen die eigene Bevölkerung eingesetzt

14-5-2014 – Der französische Außenminister Laurent Fabius bezichtigte am gestrigen Dienstag die Regierung in Damaskus, die Vorrichtungen zur Produktion chemischer Kampfstoffe nicht wie vereinbart vernichtet zu haben. Fabius verkündete nach einem Treffen mit seinem Amtskollegen John Kerry in Washington, er habe “glaubwürdige Zeugen” für die Angriffe mit Chlorgas von Präsident Bashar al-Assad. Fabius und Kerry treffen sich erneut am morgigen Donnerstag in London.
Um einem Luftangriff der USA zu entgehen, hatte sich Al-Assad verpflichtet, bis zum 30. Juni die Chemiewaffen , die sich noch im Besitz der Regierung befinden, zu vernichten. Bislang wurden 92% der Bestände auf hoher See unter höchsten Sicherheitsvorkehrungen neutralisiert. Fabius betonte auch, er werde bei der “tragischen Farce”, die die Präsidentschaftswahlen in Syrien am 3. 15-5-20014 – In a recent column for the London-based Saudi daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, the daily’s former editor Tariq Alhomayed argues that a military solution is the only solution to the Syrian crisis. He states that President Bashar Al-Assad and his allies – Iran, Hizbullah and also Al-Qaeda – understand only the language of force, and therefore good intentions and negotiations are fruitless. As a first step towards achieving a military solution, Al-Homayed calls for arming the Free Syrian Army, and adds that after the war is decided a political solution will follow.
