PYD Kurds reportedly turn off water in Hasaka

22.5.2014 – Kurdish fighters reportedly cut the water supply to the entire northeastern Syrian city of al-Hasaka on Thursday, according to the independent al-Hasaka News Center (HNC), as fighting continued for a second consecutive day between Kurdish militias and the pro-Assad National Defense Forces.

BEIRUT, 22.5.2014 – Syria’s Kurds are facing next month’s presidential election with a mix of defiance, pragmatism and indifference.
The June 3 polls are expected to see President Bashar Assad easily defeat two lesser-known challengers, but in areas where the Kurdish PYD (Democratic Union Party) holds sway, the battle will be over turnout, and spinning the events of election day as a “victory.”

The pro-Kurdish Patriotic Council has announced in a statement that it has boycotted upcoming Syria presidential election set for June 3. – According to Rudaw TV that statement has asked Kurds and pro-democracy people” to boycott the elections and do not go to ballot boxes. The chief of the Kurdish council Taher Safuk had earlier asked Syria opposition coalition to officially recognize the right of the Kurds. The Kurdish council is affiliated with the opposition body.
