MESOP : SYRIA UNTOLD : Syrian Elections & Parallel Realities /A PARALELL REALITY

01 June 2014 – Syria Untold – As it continues to bomb population centers throughout the country, the Syrian regime has devoted itself to the farce that is the presidential elections. Through this performance, Bashar al-Assad is presented as an uncontested ruler and the only holder of the truth, in a context of a conspiracy against the country. In the Syrian elections, unlike in those held elsewhere, there are answers without questions. Assad delivers speeches and statements that respond to a parallel reality, one that ignores the suffering on the ground and silences what is truly at stake. How can elections be held while the country is being destroyed? How can the word democracy be pronounced where there is no sovereignty? What about the 200,000 killed and the millions of refugees and displaced?

MESOP : Obama ramps up on Syria

AL MONITOR – 2.6.2014 – US President Barack Obama this week called for a new global counterterrorism strategy including engaging US allies bordering Syria to contend with refugees and terrorists working across Syria’s borders. In a May 28 commencement address to cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point, Obama said the danger from terrorists in Syria is now a direct threat to the United States.“As the Syrian civil war spills across borders, the capacity of battle-hardened extremist groups to come after us only increases,” he said.

Ceasefire breaks down between Kurds & regime in Hasakah

Benjamin Hiller via Benjamin Hiller Photojournalist : The short ceasefire broke down before the upcoming Syrian “elections”, as I suggested in my last article for ZENITH. Especially the heightened presence of Regime officials in Qamishli “helped” to break down the ceasefire, as the Syrian regime takes a more and more open Anti-Kurdish (e.g. regarding the Autonomy Movement) stance: http://www.basnews.com/en/News/Details/Ceasefire-breaks-down-between-Kurds-and-regime-in-Hasakah-/21898

TODAY’S MESOP OPINION (II) : Syria’s ‘Western-Backed’ Rebels? – Not in Weapons

NOT WESTERN BACKED !

By Marlin Dick – Daily Star, Lebanon – 2014-05-31 19:54 GMT – Beirut — For most of the Syrian uprising, media outlets throughout the world have described the opposition as being “Western-backed.” The political opposition-in-exile umbrella group the National Coalition has certainly earned its share of support from Western capitals, in the realms of politics and diplomacy, but using the adjective to describe the armed opposition has some serious limitations, such as in the realm of weaponry. For a variety of reasons, a main one being the less-than-adequate military assistance from abroad, many rebel groups have relied on do-it-yourself weaponry, as mini-arms industries have sprung up.
