AL MONITOR – EDWARD DARK – 4-6-2014 – ALEPPO, Syria — They’ve been called the blood elections by the Syrian opposition, and that name might be appropriate in more ways than one. As the war and slaughter continue to engulf most of this tormented nation, holding presidential elections might seem very bizarre and macabre, yet there is undeniable logic in it all. For the regime, it is not about filling a constitutional void, or even about legitimacy, as no one is under the illusion that these elections are anywhere near free and fair. In fact, the outcome is a foregone conclusion: another seven-year mandate for Bashar al-Assad and another rubber stamp vote, albeit this time with two token contenders. All previous elections during the time of the Assad clan were referendums with only one candidate.

 Rebels shell Damascus as polling concludes

A mortar shell struck the roof of Damascus University’s Law School Wednesday morning, according to both pro- and anti-Assad sources, as rebels continued to fire on the capital after repeated attacks during Tuesday’s presidential voting. A total of 130 shells struck Damascus on Tuesday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, killing three and injuring more than 15. Pro-Assad celebrations were staged in and around polling centers in Damascus and other regime-held areas. “It was like a tribute, not a presidential election with three competitors,” a Hasaka-based activist told Syria Direct on Tuesday.

Assad is facing token challenges from businessman Hassan al-Nouri and MP Maher Hajjar.State TV said voting was extended for five hours past the original deadline “because of the massive influx of voters”.
