How ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi became the world’s most powerful jihadist leader / Washington Post

Undated file picture released Jan. 29, 2014, by the official Web site of Iraq’s Interior Ministry claiming to show Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the head of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. (Iraqi Interior Ministry via AP)
For all his power and newfound notoriety, there are only two authenticated photos of a man now called the world’s “most powerful jihadi leader.” One shows a serious man with an olive complexion and round countenance. The other, released by the Iraqi government in January, depicts an unsmiling bearded figure in a black suit. The image is cracked and blurry, as though someone had taken a picture of a picture.

Assad: Westen überdenkt wegen Irak-Konflikt Position zu Syrien
Aktualisiert 11.

Militants Sweeping Toward Baghdad / The New York Times
By SUADAD AL-SALHY, ALAN COWELL and RICK GLADSTONE
By late Wednesday there were unconfirmed reports that the Sunni militants, many aligned with the radical Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, were battling loyalist forces at the northern entrance to the city of Samarra, about 70 miles north of Baghdad. The city is known for a sacred Shiite shrine that was bombed in 2006, during the height of the American-led occupation, touching off sectarian mayhem between the Sunni minority and Shiite majority.Sunni Militants Drive Iraqi Army Out of Mosul
An influential Iraqi Shiite cleric, Moktada al-Sadr, called for the formation of a special force to defend religious sites in Iraq. The authorities in neighboring Iran, which is predominantly Shiite, canceled all visas and flights for pilgrims to Baghdad and intensified border security, Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
Arms Windfall for Insurgents as Iraq City Falls
MESOP : US WEAPONRY CAPTURED BY ISIL & TRANSFERRED TO HASSAKAH (KURDISTAN-SYRIA)
By THE NEW YORK TIMES – The insurgent fighters who routed the Iraqi army out of Mosul on Tuesday did not just capture much of Iraq’s second-largest city. They also gained a windfall of arms, munitions and equipment abandoned by the soldiers as they fled — arms that were supplied by the United States and intended to give the troops an edge over the insurgents. The problem is not a new one, but it looms larger now that the United States is shifting its counterterrorism strategy away from using American armed forces directly, and toward relying on allied or indigenous troops and security forces supplied and trained by the United States. President Obama proposed last week that a $5 billion fund be set up to finance such efforts.
TODAY’S MESOP EDITORIAL : ISIS bids for global jihad leadership with Mosul attack
11.6.2014 – AL MONITOR – The ghost of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the founder of what is today the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) has become the next generation of “al-Qaedism” — more violent, ruthless and extreme than any of its predecessors. ISIS made a bold gamble for its stunning victory in Mosul, taking both a historic great city and symbolic leadership of the global jihad.
MESOP MOSUL : OFFENSIVE AGAINST ISIL BY ISLAMIST COALITION
A new coalition of Islamic rebel factions, the “Operations Room for the People of the Levant,” has announced a new offensive against ISIL. On Monday, al-Nusra Front, Islamic Front, and Kurdish fighters launched attacks on the ISIL-held town of al-Bab. Meanwhile, in an interview with Lebanon’s al-Akhbar, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said that since the beginning of the crisis, Syrians had trusted the state, and that his re-election was proof that this support remains. Syria has begun releasing prisoners under a general amnesty declared by Assad. The amnesty should cover prisoners detained under anti-terrorism legislation and foreign fighters, as long as they turn themselves in within a month. However, it is unclear how many prisoners will be released.
