Murphy’s Law: Russian Syrian Secrets
June 18, 2014: Recently the web site of the Russian company that makes the MiG-29 fighter posted a document stating that four Syrian MiG-29s had been upgraded in 2011 to the MiG-20SM standard. When this tidbit made the Western news media the document on the Russian web site suddenly had the reference to the four Syrian MiG-29s removed.The MiG-29SM upgrade makes older Mig-29s (like those the Syrians have) capable of using a wider variety of new weapons (smart bombs and new improved air-to-air missiles). The upgrades replace a lot of the older electronics, including the radar and generally makes the MiG-29 a more effective aircraft. Now questions have been raised about how much more Russia has done to improve Syria’s MiG-29 fleet.
Major Clashes Between Peşmerge and ISIS Near Kirkut

Major clashes have taken place between peşmerge units and fighters with the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) in the province of Kirkuk, says an article in Özgür Gündem. A larger number of ISIS fighters were killed in the fighting, and there are reports that the peşmerge also suffered some losses. The fighting points to the growing threat posed to Kurdistan by the ISIS, who captured Mosul from the Iraqi army on June 10th and have been launching a multi-frontal offensive in South Kurdistan, Iraq and Rojava. |

13 killed in bomb blast in northern Syria
At least 13 civilians were in a car bomb blast in Turb Spi in Cezire canton in Syria Kurdish regions in northern country, Ronahi TV said in a report. According to the canton’s PM Kana’at Barakat five of the dead were Arabs, three were refugees from Aleppo, three others were Kurds and the indentity of two dead bodies have not been identified. The bodies of the three Kurdish people were buried in Turb Spi. Investigations are continued to find out the perpetrators of the attacks. Cezire canton PM Hakam Khalu said the attacks are aimed at making rifts between Arabs and Kurds in northern Syria.

June 13, 2014 – The facts about the humanitarian situation in Syria are well-known: A minimum of 160,000 people have been killed. About 6.5 million Syrians have been forced to leave their homes and are displaced inside Syria, and 2.7 million are refugees in neighboring countries—altogether, nearly half of Syria’s population of 22 million. The refugee burden on neighbors is immense: There are a million Syrian refugees in Lebanon, whose population is only a bit over 4 million, and 600,000 registered in Jordan, with a population of just over 6 million. These official refugee figures may be far lower than the real numbers (there are probably over a million refugees in Jordan), and do not begin to express the misery in which so many Syrians now live.

(ANF) 16.6.2014 – Three members of a special forces unit of the KRG were taken prisoner by the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) near Mosul yesterday. In a separate incident two soldiers with the Peşmerge were killed and two more wounded in a bombing attack on the border with Rojava.
