KT News: – 10-10-2014 – YPG/YPJ forces continue to tenaciously resist ISIS attacks within the city of Kobanê while, across the Turkish border, the authorities have responded to huge Kurd protests with bullets, gas, mass arrests and curfews. Salih Mulsim, co-chair of the PYD (Democratic Union Party) said yesterday that the Kobanê Kurds “fight with Kalashnikovs against tanks and missiles” and he accused Turkey of reneging on a promise to open a safe corridor to enable more support to be sent to these Kurd forces. In an interview with ANF, Muslim gave an account of his recent meeting with Turkish officials. “They told us that they don’t want Kobanê to fall”, he said.

“What’s at Stake in Kobani: Islamic State and Kobani Calculations,” By Carl Drott (JOSHUA LANDIS BLOG)

By Carl Drott (freelance journalist, visited Kobani in August-September) – The situation currently looks grim for the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and others defending Kobani (Ayn al-Arab) from the Islamic State (IS). Still, it is conceivable that air strikes together with reinforcements and armaments could enable YPG to not only prevail, but go on the offensive again. While both IS and YPG would ideally want to see the other side utterly defeated, there are also more local goals. In the wider area around Kobani, the conflict dynamics and prospects for successful rule are also affected by the role of Arab civilians and anti-IS rebels.

Why Did IS Attack Kobani?

IS’ decision to attack Kobani in mid-September appears rational in the light of its somewhat crippled capabilities in Iraq and recent defeats against YPG in the Jazira area. Not only was Kobani the low hanging fruit, but it could be plucked quickly. IS understood that time was short before the coalition air campaign was extended into Syria.

By Scott Lucas October 9, 2014 – eaworldview – Amid growing signs that the US is preparing for the fall of the Kurdish center of Kobane in northern Syria — and preparing to blame Turkey for the Islamic State’s takeover — I was one of the analysts speaking on Wednesday to the Voice of Russia about the situation. We differed in our perspectives, with the British-based Turkish analyst Tunc Aybak focusing on Ankara’s “deliberate strategic negligence”, Turkish analyst Bunyamin Esen noting Ankara’s “legitimate issues”, and my comment about the debate beyond the Islamic State and Kobane:
