ARA News –    16 Oct 2014 – Hasakah, Syria – On Wednesday, militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIL), an al-Qaeda offshoot, stormed headquarters of the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG), the Assayish forces (military and security arms of the Democratic Union Party ‘PYD’), and Sutoro army (Christian militia) in al-Hasakah province, northeastern Syria. Dozens were killed during the IS-led attacks, local sources reported.

Anti-regime protest in Alawite Tartus / MESOP : WHOLE SYRIA IS SUFFERING – NOT ONLY JUST KOBANE

16-10-2014 – MESOP – Approximately a dozen protestors in the Alawite-majority city of Tartus, a support base for President Bashar al-Assad, took to the streets Wednesday demanding the fall of the regime, the first such protest in Tartus since the start of the revolution, reported pro-opposition news network All4Syria.
The participants, reportedly all of whom were Alawites, were arrested and “led off in a barbaric fashion to the military intelligence branch in the al-Hurra area,” Banan al-Hassan, a member of the Latakia branch of the civil society group Syrian Revolution General Commission,
wrote on her Facebook page Wednesday.

MESOP : Kurds Push ISIS Back in Kobani

 16-10-2014 – Kurdish forces and intensified U.S.-led air strikes have successfully pushed back ISIS advances (BBC) in the Turkish-Syrian border town of Kobani, according to Kurdish officials. While Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davuto?lu said that Turkey will not allow its citizens to cross into Syria to defend Kobani, Turkey has outlined locations for potential humanitarian safe zones (Hurriyet) along its border with Syria. – Turkey seems unlikely to commit itself to becoming a more active member of the anti-ISIS coalition, writes CFR’s Steven Cook.

KOBANE – Doğan News Agency – 16-10-2014 – The Syrian Kurdish town of Kobane, which has been under assault by Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) jihadists for a month, has turned into a ghost town where street clashes prevail, a Doğan News Agency journalist has reported from the city.According to the report, 2,000 civilians still remain in the city despite ISIL’s continuous assaults, as officials are seeking ways to protect them.ISIL has increased its attacks on the area near the crossing gate at the Turkish-Syrian border, prompting the People’s Protection Units (YPG), the armed wing of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), to take position within the city limits.

The main aim is to generate fear in Islamic State’s ranks, said the head of “White Shroud” – a group that says it has killed more than 100 Islamic State fighters in attacks in Deir al-Zor province in recent months. The name reflects that aim: White Shroud is a reference to the death shroud it says awaits Islamic State fighters responsible for crimes against the Syrian people, said the group’s leader, Abu Aboud, in an interview via Skype.

MESOP FOCUS : ISIS makes “substantial gains” in Iraq: US envoy

By James Reinl RUDAW  – 16-10-2014 – NEW YORK – The senior US envoy for tackling Islamic State (ISIS) has warned that well-armed militiamen are making “substantial gains” in Iraq, but that efforts against the group continue around the besieged north Syrian town of Kobane.Gen. John Allen said ISIS is fighting with “tactical initiative and momentum” in Iraq’s western province of Anbar. Intensified US-led airstrikes around Kobane have killed “several hundred” attackers, but the Kurdish-held town “could very well still fall”, he warned. “There was a need for additional fire support to go in to try to relieve the defenders and to buy some white space ultimately for the reorganization of the ground,” Gen Allen said about Kobane. “And so we have picked up the tempo and the intensity of the airstrikes.

While pretty much all the various Kurdish factions are fighting Islamic State, they aren’t necessarily fighting Islamic State together. And one possible reason … is a chilling one.

Some Kurds have suggested that the regime of Syrian president Bashar Al Assad, which has systematically oppressed Syrian Kurds, is now backing some Kurdish factions in Syria in order to open up an eastern front against Islamic State.

MESOP : NOW MILITARY FROM KRG FLOWS TO PYD ?!

ARA News – 15-10- 2014 – Istanbul, Turkey – Hamid Darbandi, the official advisor and manager of the Syrian crisis’ file in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) stated that the Iraqi Kurdistan  has provided military assistance for Kurdish fighters in Kobane, northern Syria, who are defending the area against extremists of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS).
