MESOP Syria Daily: Has the Islamic State Been Defeated in Kobane?
By Scott Lucas October 18, 2014 07:16 – There are conflicting reports on Saturday morning over whether the Islamic State has been fully ejected from the Kurdish center of Kobane in northern Syria, after almost two weeks of fighting inside the town. The New York Times is a platform for the optimists, with Kurds, Americans, and Syrian insurgents all speaking of heavy losses for the Islamic State as it lost territory.Following the assertion on Friday by a Kurdish official that the Islamic State was out of Kobane, though still fighting on the eastern outskirts, a Syrian insurgent commander on the western front said:
ISIS is retreating and we are advancing. Airstrikes destroyed most of their heavy weapons. Those who are left in the city center don’t have a way out….The battle will be ending soon.US spokesman General Lloyd Austin repeated claims of hundreds of jihadists killed by American-led airstrikes:
MESOP Ibrahim Biro Interview – Syrian Kurds seeking unity in face of ISIS threat
IF VAGUE SPECULATIONS MEET WITH VAGUE SPECULATIONS
Ibrahim Biro: The Americans know that the current armed force in Rojava has been fighting the Syrian opposition, and they don’t like that. They mean to bring together the Syrian opposition. But they also know that Syrian Kurdistan is different. So they said that in order to receive support, the Kurdish groups have to work together.
By RUDAW – 18-10-2014 – In this interview with Rudaw, Ibrahim Biro, secretary-general of the Union Kurdish Party in Syria says that a meeting currently going on in Duhok between different groups is to turn a new page and reach an agreement on the administration and defense of Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava). Biro says that the Islamic State (IS) is a powerful force and that only by working together Syrian Kurds can overcome that threat. The international coalition, says Biro, has also set a condition that Kurdish groups in Rojava must work together in order to qualify for any military assistance.

MESOP TODAY’S COMMENTARY : Let Them Eat Bombs – The Cost of Ignoring Syria’s Humanitarian Crisis
by: ARON LUND – OCTOBER 17, 2014 – Winter is coming, and the humanitarian situation in Syria has never been so dire, with more than 3 million refugees abroad and some 6.5 million internally displaced—nearly half of the country’s population.According to UN figures, more than 10 million Syrians now need outside aid to survive, nearly half of them stuck in areas under siege or otherwise hard to access. The power infrastructure and agricultural sector are breaking down due to the strains of war and a lack of upkeep. Across Syria, the prices of fuel, food, and everyday goods are skyrocketing due to systemic failures in the power supply structure, war, and bombings. Millions of Syrians are left to face the winter cold in appalling conditions, at a time when wealthy Western and Arab nations spend billions on counterterrorism and renewed rebel training missions.
