Syria: The New US Narrative — “Choose Assad or Choose The Extremists”

EAworldview – 15-12-2013 – A video analysis of the new narrative in Washington, “It’s Assad or It’s The Extremists in Syria” — a narrative now being put out by a former high-level US Ambassador, probably on behalf of officials in the Obama Administration, as well as by American media and analysts:

The analysis was spurred by articles in Time Magazine, The Daily Telegraph, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. Since it has been filmed, the narrative has been fed by distorted reports in outlets such as Reuters and The Wall Street Journal, which said — wrongly — that the Supreme Military Council’s head Salem Idriss had been forced to flee Syria because of an attack on the Free Syrian Army by the recently-formed Islamic Front.

15-12-2013 – MESOP  – The Head of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party Salih Muslim expressed his support for a Russian call to hold a consultative conference between the Syrian government and the opposition in Moscow before the Geneva 2 conference.

Muslim in an interview with a program broadcasted by Russia Today TV, expressed his wish to hold more than one consultative conference in order to unite the visions on the delegations that must attend the Geneva 2.

Salih Muslim is said to be Erbil

15-12-2013 – MESOP – The co-leader of Syria pro-Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), Salih Muslim was due to arrive in Erbil late on Saturday, Rudaw website said in a report. The visit aims to settle differences between PYD and Barzani-affiliated Syrian Kurds Patriotic Council. Rudaw had earlier had quoted Barzani office chief Foad Hussein as saying that Muslim will visit the region. The visit comes months after Erbil did not allow Muslim to go to Europe through the region, something that deepened tensions between the two sides. Erbil accuses PYD of marginalizing other Syrian Kurdish parties as well as supporting the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

The Kurdish Question The Elephant in the Room / By OFRA BENGIO

12-12-2013 – The American Interest – Across the Middle East, Kurdish politics are growing more assertive and self-confident. The status quo is increasingly untenable, but the United States appears to have no game plan.

In recent months, owing in part to the fallout from the Syrian civil war, belated signs of intellectual movement regarding the future of Kurdish politics have emerged from some Western analysts. We need a deeper understanding of history and context to evaluate this movement, however, because the role of U.S. policy will be crucial in whatever the future brings.

Syria: Assad Tries to Buy Food With Iran’s Line of Credit / “SPECIFIC PAYMENTS”

EAworldview – 15-12-2013 – Reuters reports that Syria has used an Iranian line of credit to put out tenders for vital imports of food for winter.

Syria’s General Foreign Trade Organisation is seeking to buy 150,000 tons of sugar, 50,000 tons of rice, 25,000 tons of flour, and a range of other food, traders said. The tender specified that funds would come from the Export Development Bank of Iran. In July, Tehran extended the $3.6 billion line of credit to Damascus. That has been used to cover Iran’s shipment of oil and gas to Syria, whose energy sector has been badly damaged by its 34-month conflict.

Kurdish Strategy Towards Ethnically-Mixed Areas in the Syrian Conflict /Van Wilgenburg

Publication: Terrorism Monitor Volume: 11 Issue: 23 – December 13, 2013  – By: Wladimir van Wilgenburg

Kurdish fighters in Syria have taken greater control of areas inhabited by both Arabs and Kurds since July 16, and aim to capture three other mixed areas in the governorates of Raqqah, Aleppo and Hasakah in order to connect existing Kurdish areas (al-Monitor, October 25). This might cause opposition by Arab tribes that the Syrian regime placed in the Kurdish-dominated areas in the governorate of Hasakah in the 1970’s as part of an Arabization plan to change the region’s demographic balance at the expense of the Kurds (al-Monitor, October 8).
