I’d even venture to say it’s the bloodiest in its entire recent history, a grotesque carnival of mayhem, death and carnage, perpetrated against the hapless and helpless citizens of this long-suffering ancient city.

December 25, 2013 – Redur Khalil is the official spokesperson of the People’s Protection Units, or in Kurdish, Yekîneyên Parastina Gel (YPG). This secular-leftist armed faction has been in control of most of the Kurdish areas of northern Syria—which the YPG refers to as West Kurdistan, or Rojava—since summer 2012. It has clashed with the Syrian regime on some occasions, but it is now increasingly embroiled in combat with Islamist rebel factions, which accuse it of atheism and of working for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

December 25, 2013 21:00 – Russia Today – Damascus has signed a major oil and gas deal with Russian company Soyuzneftegaz which allows for offshore drilling, development, and production to take place in Syria’s territorial waters for the very first time. The deal permits the exploration of 2,190 square kilometers in the Mediterranean. The costs, which are estimated at around US$90 million, will be covered solely by Soyuzneftegaz.

A number of articles have been circulating recently that observe that Assad may stick around, perhaps for good. Amidst this discussion, some controversy has been stirred up around some of Dr. Landis’ comments published in a recent BBC article. The comments under discussion were: “Someone has got to bite the bullet and say Assad stays,” and “We don’t have another game in town.”
