Nineveh Plains Transitional Justice Report: April

By Claire Evans International Christian Concern – Posted 2020-04-30 23:20 GMT

While COVID-19 dominates most of daily life in the Nineveh Governorate, sectarian tensions are further defining the landscape. Residents report competing mandates between the governorate and checkpoints operated by the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). A fracture within the PMF could further engrain Iranian influence in Nineveh and deepen the governorate’s disputed status. Meanwhile, Shabak activism has increased regarding their growing presence near Christian areas. Christians are negotiating their role with the immigration portfolio in Iraq’s government.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : Cheap oil is latest threat to Kurdish region

The Kurdistan region is challenged by the incredibly low oil prices, so that its 250,000 barrels of exports are worth far less than any money it expected to get from Baghdad.

By SETH J. FRANTZMAN   – JERUSALEM POST – APRIL 27, 2020 14:41

The Kurdistan autonomous region of Iraq is threatened by low oil prices as Iraq’s central government remains in crisis and budget debates continue. WASHINGTON DC (Kurdistan 24) – Two men from Iraq faced cases in two courts this month: in two different countries, six thousand miles apart, and thousands of miles from their homes in Fallujah.

Both were involved in violence in Iraq carried out in the name of Islam, although it is questionable whether they were motivated to kill because of their religious beliefs or whether that was a convenient cover for other motives—like a struggle for power and economic resources in post-2003 Iraq or a drive to exercise vicious domination over others.

A detention hearing for one Iraqi – Ali Yousef Ahmed al-Nouri – was scheduled for April 7 in Phoenix, Arizona.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : In Northeastern Syria, Christians Are Caught Between War Planes and COVID-19

By Maria Lozano – Aid to the Church in Need – 24 April 2020

Before the Syrian civil war, more than 20,000 Christian families lived in the Al-Jazeera region, on the border with Turkey in northeastern Syria. Many of these Christians are the descendants of those who fled the genocide of the Armenians in 1915 in Turkey or Kurdish attacks in the neighboring Iraqi area of Duhok in 1933. Today, only an estimated between 7000 and 8000 families remain. An unknown number of Christians have left in the wake of Turkey’s October 2019 invasion of the region.
