MESOPOTAMIA NEWS OUTLOOK : Turkey-US relations forged on necessity, no ‘golden era’ – German Marshall Fund

  • Anatolian Dispatch AHVAL NEWS – Jun 24 2021 12:51 Gmt+3 – The relationship between the United States and Turkey was always one of necessity for Turkey and practicality for political leaders in Washington, said Özgür Ünlühisarcıklı, the director of the Ankara based German Marshall Fund.

“There’s no such thing that Turkey and the United States once had a golden age in their relations and now it has been lost. The reality is that they never had one,” Ünlühisarcıklı told Edward Stafford in a podcast for Ahval’s Anatolian Dispatch on Tuesday.

“It was never a love affair, or a relationship based on historical friendship. This is and needs to be a relationship based on realistic expectations on both sides,” he said.

Ties between the United States and Turkey have deteriorated after Ankara acquired S-400 air defence missiles from Russia in 2019, which resulted in its exclusion from the F-35 stealth fighter jet programme and sanctions against its defence procurement agency.

Die Realität ist, dass sie nie eine hatten”, sagte Ünlühisarcléklé edward Stafford in einem Podcast für Ahvals Anatolische Botschaft am Dienstag.

Der Rote Halbmond ist Betreiber des Gemeindezentrums, landesweit gibt es in der Türkei 15 weitere solche Einrichtungen. Sie dienen als Anlaufstellen für die fast vier Millionen syrischen Flüchtlinge im Land.

Finanziert werden diese Stätten aus den Hilfsgeldern der Europäischen Union, die im Flüchtlingsabkommen von 2016 zugesagt wurden. Sechs Milliarden Euro versprach die EU der Türkei damals, doch das Geld ist inzwischen aufgebraucht.

Jun 19 2021 12:49 Gmt+3 AHVAL NEWS :  – The Taliban rejects Turkey’s proposal to keep troops in Afghanistan after the U.S. and NATO forces leave the war-torn country by a Sept. 11 deadline, Voice of America (VOA) reported on Friday.

In his meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Brussels on Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan suggested that Turkey could retain its troop presence in Afghanistan by talking to the Taliban.

The Taliban’s statement came a day after U.S. officials said President Joe Biden and Turkish President Erdoğan agreed in their meeting Monday that Turkey would continue providing security at the international airport in Afghanistan following the troop pullout.

Turkey’s Constitutional Court on Monday accepted a case seeking the closure of the nation’s second-largest opposition party, the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), after a top prosecutor revised and resubmitted an indictment alleging members collude with terrorists.

Diego Cupolo June 21, 2021 AL MONITOR –  ISTANBUL — Turkey’s second-largest opposition party, the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), faces a closure threat once more after the nation’s Constitutional Court accepted an indictment seeking to ban hundreds of members from holding political office on terror-related charges.

The original version of the indictment was filed earlier this year and rejected on procedural grounds. On June 7, Turkey’s Chief Public Prosecutor of the Court of Cassation Bekir Sahin resubmitted a revised document, which judges in the nation’s top court unanimously accepted on Monday, opening the way for a trial that could shutter the HDP in the coming months.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS LATEST : Turkey’s top court accepts indictment to shut pro-Kurdish party

Turkey’s Constitutional Court unanimously accepted an indictment for the closure of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) for alleged links to terrorism, the state-run Anadolu news agency said on Monday.

The ruling threatens to undermine calls by the European Union and the United States for Turkey to strengthen its democracy and only prosecute individuals and groups with proven involvement and links to terrorist acts. Turkey is a candidate for membership of the EU and a NATO ally.

In April, the Constitutional Court turned down a first indictment to close the HDP, citing an insufficiently built and evidenced case. The HDP is the second largest opposition party in Turkey’s parliament.

  • Ahval NEWS  – Jun 19 2021 03:17 Gmt+3 -Turkish businessman Sezgin Baran Korkmaz and journalist Veyis Ateş denied each other’s claims over an alleged 10 million euro bribe during a live interview with journalist İsmail Saymaz on Friday.

Ateş was present in the opposition Halk TV’s studios, while Korkmaz called in twice during the broadcast.

The 10 million euro bribe in question was first brought up by journalists Sevilay Yılman and Fatih Altaylı, with the former posting a since-deleted tweet and the latter writing an article. Yılman also wrote an article later on.

In the latest of his nine hour-long tell-all videos that he has been releasing since early May, the infamous mobster Sedat Peker spoke about a luxury hotel owned by Korkmaz where key figures from Turkish politics and judiciary stayed without charge and that he had been notified ahead of time of an investigation that could possibly have resulted in his arrest. Korkmaz left the country shortly after.

Mentality behind attack on HDP office same that seeks party’s closure: co-chair

Karwan Faidhi Dri @KarwanFaidhiDri  RUDAW – ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The co-chair of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Pervin Buldan said on Friday the rationale behind the attack that killed a woman at her party’s office on Thursday was the same reasoning that seeks the closure of the party.

Buldan spoke during the funeral of Deniz Poyraz, the daughter of an HDP employee who was shot dead at the HDP office in Izmir.

“The mentality that murdered Deniz is the same as [one] that pursues the HDP closure. At all costs, we will bring democracy, freedoms and justice and peace to the country,” Buldan said, as quoted in a Twitter post to the HDP’s English account.
