Trump says the PKK will have ‘no safe quarter’ after meeting with Erdogan
By Rudaw 17 May 2017 – WASHINGTON, D.C. — After their first official meeting on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan doubled down on bilateral relations and “the fight against terrorism” in the Middle East region.Trump and Erdogan gave brief statements to reporters after their 30-minute meeting at the White House in Washington, D.C.
“[The] YPG [Peoples’ Protection Units in Syria], HPG [People’s Defence Force of the PKK], PYD [Democratic Union Party], taking them into consideration, peace will never be achieved,” Erdogan said. “We shouldn’t allow them to manipulate the religious and social structures.”There were no specific mentions of the recent US announcement to further arm the US-led international coalition’s partnered Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) ground fighters in their retaking of Raqqa — a move that Turkey staunchly opposed because of US support for the primarily Kurdish YPG component of SDF.Turkey regards the PYD, YPG, PKK, and HPG to be a threat, while they US has maintained that the fighters it is supporting in the war against ISIS pose no threat to Turkey. The US and Turkey have listed the PKK as a terrorist organization.
Erdogan highlighted the “very well rooted” relations the US and Turkey have had through membership in the United Nations, NATO, and G20.”We have been enjoying close cooperation,” Erdogan said. “In the future we will build on that.”
Turkey affirmed 18 constitutional amendments last month. They include the introduction of an executive presidency that would replace the existing parliamentary presidency of government, the abolition of the office of the prime minister, the raising of the number of seats in Parliament from 550 to 600, and changes in the supreme board of judges and prosecutors (HSYK). The changes also allow the Turkish president to remain a member of his politburo while in office.
“The relations are based on common democratic values and shared interests. The relationship we have with Trump will be unbeatable,” he added, extending an invitation for Trump and his family to visit Turkey.
MESOP NEWS TODAYS OPINION : Ankara & Washington – Can “Yes” on Syria Be Achieved?
By Frederic C. Hof – Frederic C. Hof is director of the Atlantic Council’s Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East.
15 May 2017 – ATLANTIC COUNCIL – The visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the White House offers an opportunity for two NATO allies to get to “Yes” on Syria. It is important that they do so. Yet as matters now stand it is doubtful that they will, and each side bears responsibility for a bilateral split that is entirely gratuitous and needlessly damaging. Yet Presidents Trump and Erdogan have it in their power to elevate their alliance over lesser considerations that divide them.
MESOP NEWS : WILL TRUMP FIRE BRETT McGURK ?
MESOP NEWS TODAYS CENTRAL COMMENTARY : THE SULTAN IN WASHINGTON
Why the Turkish president’s biography should tell Trump everything he needs to know
By Soner Cagaptay May 12 – Soner Cagaptay is a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and author of “The New Sultan: Erdogan and the Crisis of Modern Turkey.”
Several recent analyses depict Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is set to meet with President Trump in the White House on Tuesday, as a once moderate and liberal politician who suddenly swerved away toward authoritarianism. I could not disagree more. Erdogan, who has run Turkey since 2002 either as prime minister or president, was always bent on subverting Turkey’s secularist democratic system. Those commentators who supported Erdogan’s alleged earlier liberalism now find themselves struggling hard to explain his more recent authoritarian turn. They were deluding themselves, and they would have known better had they paid more attention to Erdogan’s biography and mind-set.
MESOP LATEST NEWS FROM US CAPITOL HILL – EXPECTING ERDOGAN !
16 May 2017 – Rep. Deutch Criticizes Erdogan ahead of Visit: Last week, Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL), Ranking Member of the House Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, released a statement strongly criticizing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ahead of this week’s meeting with President Donald Trump. Deutch said, “Erdogan has been consolidating his power through flawed elections, arresting those who disagree with him, shutting down social media sites, and attacking the free press. Hosting President Erdogan at the White House sends exactly the wrong message, and I urge the President to cancel their scheduled meeting.” Read full text https://teddeutch.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=398966&utm_source=Project+on+Middle+East+Democracy+-+All+Contacts&utm_campaign=584b4e71c6-Weekly_Wire_170424&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_75a06056d7-584b4e71c6-215945965
MESOP NEWS TODAYS INQUIRY ON ERDOGAN’S VISIST IN WASHINGTON & THE PYD/YPG (PKK) PROBLEM (THE CHP POSITION!)
Turkey Painting Itself Into a Corner in Syria – Hurriyetdailynews.com – 2017-05-15
The U.S. decision to arm the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) has dealt a huge blow to the Turkish government’s position. Worse, it came just before President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to the United States. Despite that, Erdoğan is still harboring hopes of convincing President Donald Trump to reverse the decision. The opposition has suggested that Erdoğan should have canceled the meeting with Trump. Both are utterly unrealistic responses to such serious crises. The prime minister, Binali Yıldırım, sounded more realistic when he stated that Turkey cannot possibly declare war on the U.S. Nevertheless, his words only express desperation.
I think the major problem arises from the long-running refusal of Turkey’s rulers to acknowledge the facts of the Middle Eastern situation. The fact is that Turkey’s insistence on playing a major military and political role in Syria and Iraq is not viewed favorably by its Western allies. Besides, Turkey’s wish for a role at the expense of the Kurds further complicates the problem.

MESOP NEWS “ACT” : SAVE KURDISH HERITAGE IN TURKEY !
Statement on Arrest of National Geographic Photographer Mathias Depardon and the Imminent Move of the Zeynel Bey Tomb
11 May 2017 – Yesterday local sources reported that the Zeynel Bey Tomb in Hasankeyf, which has been encased in a concrete foundation, has now been lifted from its original foundation. According to local reports, the tomb will be moved tomorrow (Friday) without advance notification to the press. At the time of writing, the DSI (the State Hydraulic Works), which is responsible for the Ilisu Dam Project, has not announced the move on its web site.
While the government claims that it is transmitting Hasankeyf’s cultural heritage to the future and transforming the town into an important tourism center for the region, they have shrouded their work in secrecy. During the decades of planning and preparation for the Ilisu project, the government has denied the local people a say in shaping the future of their town. Now the government is raising new barriers to the journalistic documentation of the changes underway in Hasankeyf.
