MESOP NEWS INVESTIGATION : THE MALIKI CASE ! – International Team Investigating Maliki’s Cases of Corruption / INTERPOL

Basnews English – 13/06/2017 – 13:31 – ERBIL — An international team of investigators are currently probing into different cases of corruption in Iraq during the former Iraqi prime minister Nouri Maliki’s administration. Maliki is accused of squandering and the disappearance of $120 billion from Iraq’s 2014 budget and destruction damages worth $27 billion in Mosul due to the fall of the city as a result of his political failure.

Adel Nouri, a member of the Iraqi Parliamentary Committee of Integrity, told BasNews that an international team consisting of European and American investigators are in Iraq to investigate into the corruption cases in which Iraqi officials are involved. He noted that due to lack of an independent court in Iraq to deal with such cases and the threats against those who present evidence, the team is planning to transfer the cases to an international court.A large number of corruption cases prepared by the Integrity Commission ready for trial will be obtained by the international team, Nouri said, adding that legal procedures against the Iraqi officials are hard to be taken because they are still in power.

He explained that Maliki is accused of the disappearance of $120 billion from Iraq’s 2014 budget and damage of $30 billion to the Iraqi army in northern provinces in the wake of the Islamic State (IS) invasion of Iraq.

If an international court issues an arrest warrant for these officials and Iraqi government is unable to hand them to the court, the International Police Organization (INTERPOL) can arrest them. Representatives of Nineveh province to the Iraqi parliament are also planning to file a lawsuit against Maliki for the fall of Mosul and the collapse of the Iraqi army in the city. www.mesop.de
