Iraqi Kurdistan’s interior ministry accuses PKK of seeking tension in Sinjar

15 March 2017 – HEWLÊR-Erbil, Iraq’s Kurdistan region,— The Interior Ministry of Iraq’s Kurdistan Region on Tuesday accused the Kurdistan Worker’s Party PKK of seeking tension between rival Kurdish groups in the Sinjar region following fresh infighting in the area earlier in the day.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party KDP security forces opened fire on people protesting against the KDP Roj Peshmerga presence in Sinjar’s Khanasor area, killing one person and injuring several others. “The PKK is behind what happened today [March 14], the police who suffered injuries are not responsible,”the interior ministry said in a statement. “It is solely the PKK who are responsible and who bid to make our Yazidi brothers part of an unsavory plan.”

“The PKK is determined to ignite tension as part of its plan in the area,” the interior ministry said. “The PKK resumes provoking the Kurdistan Regional Government forces and seeks to ignite clashes.”

“The PKK is systematically determined to cause violence and riots in the region,” read a statement from the ministry, adding that the PKK is “bringing in people and armed forces to Shingal region. They continually provoke the KRG forces and try all means to incite confrontations.”

“For this purpose, they have been bringing in people and armed forces for several days now from Hasakah, Derk and other places of Syrian Kurdistan [Rojava, northern Syria] to cause problems and violence,” the statement added. The statement concluded that the KRG “does not seek the occurrence of any confrontation. We are calling upon the PKK to act wisely.”
