Some 70 months ago, unarmed, ordinary Syrians rose peacefully against a regime whose incompetence and corruption they had come grudgingly to accept. It was their rulers’ detention and beating of children that provided the tipping point. The same regime seeks now to capitalize on a bloody victory in Aleppo, where children again have been targeted. 17 Dec 2016 – DEUTSCHE WELLE – Turkey and Russia have forged a tentative dialogue over Syria. It comes as Moscow seeks to take advantage of tensions between Ankara and the West.
A year ago, Turkey and Russia were exchanging verbal blows and retaliating against each other in the wake of the Turkish downing of a Russian jet along the Syrian border. MESOP NEWS : Germany arrests suspected Turkish spy for monitoring Kurds
17 Dec 2016 – The German authorities arrested a suspected Turkish spy that was spying on Kurdish organizations and institutions was arrested, the German Federal Prosecution in Hamburg said on Friday.
The 31-year-old suspect, who was arrested in Hamburg on Thursday, had obtained information about the whereabouts, contact persons and political activities of Kurds living in Germany as well as about Kurdish institutions. The information was passed on to the Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT). The German polices searched the suspects house. He is still under investigation, the German Tagesschau reported. December 17 – By Scott Lucas – eaworldview – UPDATE 0810 GMT: Local sources and pro-opposition activists say a new evacuation deal has been agreed.The sources say the deal includes a provision for the removal of some wounded from two regime enclaves in opposition-held Idlib Province, a demand that led Iran to break two previous agreements.

Pioneering Syrian secularist intellectual passes away
Sadiq Jalal al-Azm, once jailed in Beirut for his attacks on religion, stood for Syrian democracy till the end
The controversial Syrian author, academic, and political activist Sadiq Jalal al-Azm passed away Sunday at the age of 82 in Berlin after a battle with illness, according to a statement released by his family.
Known especially for his pathbreaking, influential works Self-Criticism After the Defeat (1968) and Critique of Religious Thought (1969), the latter of which landed him a jail term in Beirut in 1970, al-Azm was a leading light of the secular, leftist and pan-Arab current that enjoyed widespread prominence across the Middle East in the latter half of the 20th century. Much of his writing remains banned in many Arab capitals to this day. Initially a hardline Marxist, he migrated over time to a somewhat more liberal position, but in a contra Position to Edward Said and the poet Adonis. In the early 2000s, he was active within the nascent Syrian opposition movement known as the Damascus Spring, adding his voice to calls for democratic reforms and the withdrawal of the Syrian army from Lebanon. Syrians Urge US to Release Evidence of Russian Flight Patterns
17 Dec 2016 – Russia’s attacks in Aleppo have been indiscriminate, disproportionate, and may amount to war crimes, according to evidence submitted to the independent international Commission of Inquiry by Syrian civil society groups.
On Thursday 15 December, the Syrian Civil Defense (‘White Helmets’), Syrian Network for Human Rights, Independent Doctors Association and Violations Documentation Center submitted a dossier of cases documenting Russian responsibility for and complicity in war crimes in the besieged city of eastern Aleppo. Highlighting 304 incidents in which they believed there was a “high likelihood” of Russian responsibility, the organizations urged the Commission of Inquiry to investigate Russia’s responsibility for war crimes in Aleppo and to report on such findings when it presents the results of its Special Inquiry into the situation in Aleppo to the Human Rights Council in March 2017.
