Washington Still ‘Seeking to Divide Syria Into Separate Enclaves’

Sputnik News – 2016-09-06 22:13 GMT – The US actions in Syria have all the earmarks of implementing the much-discussed “Plan B” voiced by US Secretary John Kerry in February 2016, Russian academic Stanislav Ivanov suggests, adding that Washington is seeking to divide Syria into a number of enclaves.

Washington is pushing ahead with its much-discussed “Plan B” in Syria seeking to divide the country into several enclaves with the leadership loyal to Washington and its allies, Stanislav Ivanov, a leading research fellow at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO) writes in his article for New Eastern Outlook. “The essence of the American plan B for Syria is the distribution of its regions into enclaves and the consequent isolation of the central authorities. While Bashar Assad remains in power, Washington and its allies will be promoting separatist sentiments across Syria to sabotage any attempts to transfer the Syrian conflict into the peaceful reconciliation process,” Ivanov suggests. MESOP TODAYS COMMENTARY BY ELIJAH J Magnier

. The US-Russia deal: Putin applies a Matryoshka-like policy in Syria /  Did Russia, Iran and Hezbollah fail in Aleppo, showing their limitations? /  Russia expected Hezbollah to complete the siege of Aleppo as a bargaining tool for further negotiation

By Elijah J. Magnier: @EjmAlrai – The Russian – American agreement over the city of Aleppo, is completed…no it is not completed… it will be completed.

Both superpower countries agreed on several issues, but above all to allow humanitarian convoys in the city (and other parts of Syria), and to freeze the war situation in Aleppo, defining demarcation lines between all belligerents, thus creating a potential springboard model to other Syrian regions. The US suggested demilitarising the city, on both rebel and government forces sides, but Russia rejected the proposition, also disapproved of by Russia’s allies (Damascus and Tehran). One of question remains: how will the US impose any decision on al-Qaida and jihadist groups who are fighting in the area (along with other so called “moderate rebels” and vetted by the US).At any rate, if and when the deal is concluded, all military efforts will be dedicated to hitting the “Islamic State” group (acronym ISIS/ISIL/Daesh) and Jabhat al-Nusra – Al Qaida in Syria (as previously named) and all jihadist factions that refuse to join the political process. MESOP TODAYS OPINION : BY WILSON FACHE ( AL MONITOR)  – What is the Turkish army really doing in Iraq?

7 Sept 2016 – A cannon shot roared into the night. The target was in the town of Bashiqa in northern Iraq, seized by the Islamic State (IS) in 2014. Seconds after the explosion, the clatter of a collapsing building echoed in the mountain. For months now, the Turkish army has repeatedly targeted IS from positions they hold 15 kilometers (9 miles) northeast of Mosul.“The main goal of this base is to fight against Daesh [the Arabic acronym for Islamic State],” one Turkish soldier told Al-Monitor on condition of anonymity. “We deployed some fire-support vehicles, artillery, tanks and mortars, among other things, to destroy them,” he added. SOUTH KURDISTAN ( IRAQ)

MESOP : ACTUAL SITUATION REPORT AUGUST – SEPT 2016 ON IRAQ / THE INNER PUK CONFLICT

By Emily Anagnostos & the ISW Iraq Team

Iraqi Kurdish parties fractured over the impending no-confidence vote against Kurdish Finance Minister Hoshyar Zebari. The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and Gorran, two Kurdish opposition parties in the Kurdistan Alliance, indicated on August 30 and September 1 that they would dismiss Zebari in order to undermine the influence of his party, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). However, several PUK leaders have recognized both that Zebari’s dismissal could empower former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to reclaim the premiership, possibly to the detriment of Kurdish political interests, and that the Kurds will lose their influence in the Iraqi Government if the Kurdistan Alliance fails to maintain a unified position.  Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=77850
