31 Jan 2016 – nrttc.com – HEWLÊR-Erbil, Kurdistan region ‘Iraq’,— A committee was established in Iraqi Kurdistan to investigate the German weapons and military equipment sold on the black market, days after reports claimed Peshmerga forces had sold the German-donated weapons, senior official said Friday.

Germany on January 23, called on the government of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region to ensure that arms provided by Berlin were only used by Kurdish peshmerga fighting the Islamic State group. German public broadcasters WDR and NDR reported earlier that weapons from the German military, including G3 assault rifles and various pistols, were spotted on sale in black markets in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Iraqi Kurdistan’s Deputy Minister of Peshmerga Anwar Haji Osman said the committee has been established by an order from Massoud Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), whose presidency term expired in August 2015 but remained in the post.

“No German is on the committee,” Osman added. “We also met with German officials on the issue.”

Jabar Yawar, Chief of Staff of the Peshmerga Ministry said last week “We are going to carefully look into the issue, and violators—if any–will face serious punishment,”.

In recent statements, the Deputy Chief of Staff in the Peshmerga Ministry Qaraman Kamal said they intend to prove their “clarity” through the committee, though they are certain no weapons have been sold. Meanwhile, Head of Peshmerga Committee from Kurdistan Parliament said “it is possible one or several members of Peshmerga sold German weapons.”

One former Peshmerga fighter, now seeking asylum in Germany, admitted to having sold his weapon to afford the trip to Germany with his family and escape the war.

According to the Reuters news agency, Germany has provided Kurdish forces with 1,800 tons of weapons and material since 2014.
