MESOP REPORT : KDP denies Syria Kurdish party blames over ditches

14-4-2014 – Kurdpress – The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has replied to accusations made by Syrian pro-Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) regarding the ditches that are being dug on the Syria-Iraq border.

Releasing a statement the former-ruling KDP denied it has ordered digging the ditches on its border with Syria Kurdish regions and said the decision was made by Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to protect the borders of the Kurdish region.
“KDP is not involved in the security measures taking place along the border, it is Kurdish security forces that decide how best to protect Kurdish borders from terrorist threats and smugglers,” read the statement.
In a condemning statement, KDP accuses PYD of having dubious agreements with Kurdish enemies.
“They have made Syrian Kurds into their prisoners and prevent the Kurdish cause in Syria from developing,” the statement pointed out.
The statement is a response to PYD’s public accusation, in which they accuse the KRG and the KDP of digging the border ditches as a favor to Turkey as well as imposing sanctions on Syrian Kurds.
KDP says that the Semelka border point is officially open, however there is no security along 17km of it, facilitating the entry of terrorists into the Kurdistan Region.
Digging of the ditches sparked protests in Kurdistan Region in the past days and PYD leader Salih Muslim accused the KDP for having atrocity policies against his party and asked all Kurdistan Region parties to condemn the creation of the ditches.
