MESOP FLASH : Over 2,500 prisoners in Kurdistan

29-3-2014 – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is building four big prisons as the number of the prisoners increased. KRG officials stated that currently there are 2600 prisoners in Kurdistan who have been sentenced for various amounts of time. A recent Amnesty International report about Iraq and the conditions of its prisons revealed a high rate of executions by Iraqi Government, but the rate is very low in the Kurdistan Region. As a result, there has been an increase in the number of prisoners are increased sentenced to death or for life in Kurdistan which has, for some time, suspended the execution law. (Xendan, KT)
